Adjusting Xenons for Use in France

Featured Replies

I will be taking my Octy (2010 FL vRS) to France in the summer.  It is fitted with Maxidot and factory Xenons and I am aware that there is a Tourist mode in the menu to stop the dipped beams from turning with the steering, but does it also flatline the beam to prevent the need for beam deflectors to be stuck on the headlamps?

Thanks in advance for you help.

It certainly does.

Just enable Tourist mode.

The one for not turning Xenons with steering is Bend lighting i think, in the Menu.

yep, as above, just select tourist mode.

iirc if you're in tourist mode your afs is disabled (might have dreamt that ..) and don't forget to switch it back when you come home.

the switch to tourist mode and time change is all part of my "in-the-queue-to-get-on-the-eurotunnel" routine :)

.. just to add; i took a trip recently with a friend - clever chap who has a good job and runs a nearly new well spec'd 5 series.  he put some sticky deflectors on his lenses in the eurotunnel queue which i thought was odd (given the skoda doesn't need them).  I queried this to be told that he's never looked at the owners manual..

Thanks for the replies.  My 'in-the-queue-to-get-on-the Eurotunnel-routine' is similar and includes adjusting my watch  and resetting the TomTom for kilometers and kph instead of the usual miles and mph.  Just need to remind myself how to get into the menu to select Tourist!!  Now where is that handbook?

i am also going on the euro tunnel to see my folk in Belgium and wondering if i am able to do this with my vrs. its a 2012 so fl but from as far as i can tell the lights move with the steering and also has the headlight washers but no idea if it has xenon or weather that is an xenon feature just know they our quite bright. also not sure if its maxidot or standard vrs. sorry guys i know thats not a lot to go on but if someone could shed some light on it would be mighty grateful :)

thx all

Xenons look like this, note the grey bulbous part, that's Xenons.

looks more like that

that headlight pic looks spot on to mine has like a blue i think sidelight bulb so even know the light is white its has a slight blue look to it

The latest standard display looks like maxidot, the best way to tell is to open the door. Maxidot shows a picture of the car with the door open, non maxidot you will just get a light. You will definitely know if you have xenon's or not by looking at the control just behind the steering wheel, if you have an headlight height adjuster then you have halogens, if not then you will have xenon's.

Yeah, the pictures Lee posted are of a pre-facelift instrument binnacle so are of no use to you and the headlight he posted is actually a halogen facelift headlight, not a xenon (both types have projector lenses on the facelift Octavia).

Countryboy has mentioned the easiest way to tell if you have Xenons and maxidot.

The other easy way is to tell about xenons is look at the headlight and look closely around the lens- if it's xenon it'll say AFS Xenon or words to that effect on the bezel.

Also I'm 99% sure that the only way to get headlight washers on a vRS was to spec Xenons so if you have them you probably have xenons (although I could be wrong there).

Turn you lights on crouch in front of car, if your retinas burn out you have xenons, if they dont you dont have xenons :-)

If no maxidot, use vcds or take to dealer (charge varies some dealers do it foc others charge £50-80) to invoke tourist mode

thanks guys i don't think i have maxidot as i open the door and only a little symbol at the bottom to show door is open so no tourist mode :( but did have a look at the light and it said's bending xenon but also behind the light states afs so that's one thing answered. but now we talk about maxidot is there a way of getting that put on my car without changing the instrument cluster and if so what does it cost roughly.
