Exhaust heat wrap - how much do I need?

Featured Replies

As per title, I've got a toyosports 3" decat coming and want to wrap it. How much am I going to need? Anyone else done it?

Is this actually worth doing on a 1.8T? I'm not totally convinced, but wouldn't mind hearing people's opinions, as I also have a 3" decat to fit. Could make it interesting to install as space is tight anyway.

Hotter gases move faster, so in theory can only but help, and hopefully a thin layer won't obstruct the fitting too much.

Wether it makes any difference while using the original cat back system, I don't know.

Ive done it on my decated vrs. What easy to refit aswell. Just remember to soak the heat wrap first. As once it dries to the exhaust it will shrink and be a nice tight fit.

and also only use heat wrap on stainless steel parts otherwise it will corrode the exhaust from inside out

I've done from the turbo all the way to the back box on mine got miltek 2.5 non res and sports cat think I used about 30m and used a few stainless steel jubilee clips to stop it unraveling while your doing it

Did you notice any difference?

I'd take a guess and say 10m - 15m may be enough just for the downpipe then

yea 10m for down pipe erm not sure I just did it as the stuff is cheap and in theory has benefits and reduces radiation of heat.

Would have to dyno before and after to see really

Just noticed your reply, what do you soak it in? Water?

yea water makes it more flexible really funny when you first get the car up to temp everyone thinks your car is on fire

Make sure you wear gloves and if you do it while its on the car wear safety glasses.... Lots of tiny ceramic needles fall out another good reason to wet it to stop them shedding. From experience you will be very itchy and have red dotted hands if you don't
