Rally drivers

What kind of contract does a WRC driver have?

Skoda hiring Colin Mcrae for the GB rally got me thinking about this.

I can't imagine Jenson Button being too happy if BAR told him they fancied using Nigel Mansell for a few races to try and get some points/develop the car ;) He would probably run to his trailer and get all stroppy then sign a deal with someone else.

I guess WRC drivers dont have such a fixed contract but do you think the skoda drivers will be upset to lose their seat or are they a lot more relaxed than F1 drivers?

I noticed some teams also select drivers depending on the surface type...what is the maximum number of drivers allowed on a team? :D

Work is boring btw ;)

Cheers

Andy

You can have as many drivers as you want in a team but can only nominate two for world championship points.

Nominations for points earning drivers have to be in before a deadline for each rally. In the case of rally GB it's after the rally Deutschland at the end of the month.

Armin Swartz is the lead driver and I presume will have a contract naming him as such for the season. The others will have various clauses allowing other drivers if Skoda so wish.

Thanks spinndrift, i was hoping you would be reading

Do you know of any new manufacturers that might come into WRC, i'm gutted that Peugeot are leaving...there is going to be hardly anyone left!

Not aware of anyone else joining.

The situation with Citroen and Peugeot is that their parent company PSA ordered them to pull out at the end of the year due to rising costs.

Peugeot has launched a sports car project but Citroen are not committed to any motorsports for 2006 but could remain in WRC if the FIA World Motorsports Council brings in cost cutting measures when it meets in October.

The head honcho at PSA was quoted as saying something like 'rallying is an interesting sport but not at any cost' in motorsports news a week or so ago.

It would be good if they could use some cheaper components, things like magnesium wheels cost a fortune and the equivalent cheaper ones won't make the cars visably slower for spectators. Same with carbon fibre etc.

They're dumping active diffs to reduce costs.

Have to see what else happens in October.

I thought I heard that Fiat & Suzuki are planning WRC cars (I can't remember if it was one or both of them). The new Swift Super 1600 looks the business.

I thought they were doing that for JWRC.
