Haggling a better price after the initial order?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I ordered my Octavia vRS back in December and although I tried, no deal was available as at the time the salesmen was selling them faster than he could count!

Now I have been waiting a while and my initial expected delivery date has been and gone, I was wondering is there anyway of haggling I new price even though the initial price was set?

I am getting the car on the 0% 3 years free servicing pcp deal so I can't really complain too much, but read on here of people getting 6% off the purchase price.

Would just like to know my options before the dealer rings me with more news on my car (hopefully it's now in the uk).

Thanks for your help!

Lets us know how it goes,

i had to look at the date, i thought i had over slept and woken up next Tuesday.

Enjoy your new car when it comes.

Well you can try. Your card is threaten to cancel the order. The dealer won't like that approach and may not be too friendly. However if you are unhappy with the deal you struck then perhaps you should cancel and renegotiate.

Typical sales pitch im afraid. People were getting over 10% on the launch weekend so im sure something could have been negotiated with a broker or different dealer. Personally I believe its bad practice to renegotiate after a deal has been agreed but I guess you have nothing to lose.

Go spec the same car on CarWow.co.uk and see what offers you get, that's what I did with my local dealer. But I don't think the vRS is available on 0% any more so I'm not sure you'd get a comparative offer, I think they are set at 2.79% finance now?

If you threaten to cancel, be prepared to go through with it, obviously. The question is whether you would recoup the loss of deposit and finance. I saved c.2k on list, so you might well be able to,

If that is the case I would hope the discounts available have improved.

There's another thread on this here about the same thing. The question to ask is: why would they go back on the agreed deal?

You'll always find people who got a better deal than you (although some of the statements on here will be wildly exaggerated) but in the end you were happy with the deal you got at the time otherwise you'd not have placed the order.

Dont bother with Carwow dealers - Drivethedeal are beating them by a good chunk currently so thats where id enquire. :)

Could you cancel on the grounds of unreasonable delivery estimates, but allow them to change your mind if they knock some money off to compensate for your inconvenience.

They have. You can now pick up the vRS from just over 20k. :)

Hi,
I waited, no always patiently, for 7 months for my vRS. As well as a good deal when I bought the car, to keep me from cancelling I got £200 towards a set of new winter wheels and £200 from Škoda UK as a thank you for holding on.

It's worth letting the dealer know you are unhappy.

Thanks for so many replies so fast!

I am not the type of person to go back on a deal and time wise I haven't really had to wait long for my car.

I do like a good deal and it's only recently that I found this forum and so wasn't aware at the time of the deals that were being given or the deal checking websites.

As one poster said, I was happy with the deal that I got at the time and only put down a minimal deposit as it was 0%

I have a good relationship with my salesman and so might suggest it in jest and see where he goes with it but I don't think I shall be doing anything silly like canceling the order, not with 28 week waits!!

Thanks again for the advice.

I did the original thread, I did go back with the carwow quotes, basically they said carwow was not to be trusted. I didn't believe that as others on here have used it and works fine. They basically said they'd give me my deposit back if I wanted to cancel. But bear in mind to place an order with another dealer I'd be back at the end of the queue. I did however get them to agree an loan car if mine hadn't arrive by a certain date, ordered start of feb, gave them a deadline of September. The dealer is about 1/2 a mile from my work and I drive past every day. So I'd rather deal with them for conveniance, I still coul even after buying from another dealer, but they may not be so inclined to go out there way to help.

How would you feel if the dealer wanted to renegotiate the price upwards? What would be your reaction?

Probably the same as someone who had ordered 4 months previously still has no delivery date and has just been told that option they ordered is no longer available.

You are entitled to your moral opinion on OP, but equally have to appreciate that dealers & manufacturers often change orders that have been accepted. For example, a number of people that have ordered a VRS, will now receive MY15 cars and are at the mercy of any spec and colour changes that may happen.

I sure as hell will be getting my O3 Elegance serviced at the dealership that wanted £68 p.m more for an SE spec car just to rub their Salesmanager's Fn nose in it & if he's not inclined to go out of his way, he'll answer a formal complaint sent his way via SUK.

I try to treat people with more respect than they treat me with, if they treat me well - and less than them if they treat me badly...

Ultimately the dealer/Skoda have missed the date they promised - so maybe your promises should carry less weight too...

I have had very little decent treatment from dealers and feel you have to play them at their own game to a certain degree...

Certainly worth exploring the options (sensitively, at first) around a discount I would argue.
