vRS: Front Discs and Pads

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a guide for this ?

For what? Changing them?

No different from any other brakes.

Yeah sorry for changing them ... is this something a beginner could do ?

Easy as pie.

This is for a Vauxhall but it's almost the same.

Looks simple and straight forward to be fair ... just need to purchase a piston tool and some grease as well as the pads and discs.

You don't need a rewind tool for the fronts.

Big pair of swan neck pliers do the job nicely :)

It's a nice easy beginner job, however please remember the basics, always use axle stands, you never work off a jack, if it fail's anything under the car is going to be a mess and that includes legs etc. Other than that it's basic hand tools eg allen key's, ratchet (breaker bar/torque wrench ideally) and a Philips head screwdriver. As far as moving the piston goes just use the old pad to protect the piston and apply pressure with a bit of wood or pry bar etc. The rears benefit from the winder tool, the fronts can be done without it though the tools can last you a lifetime so it's probably worth investing in them as you need them, it'll make it easier and you will need them when you do the rears.

Remember to check the fluid level when pushing the piston back and when it was last changed (2yr interval) and only use fresh fluid from a new container, not one that's been on the shelf in the garage for a few years, it's hydroscopic. Before driving it pump the brake pedal to make sure the piston's moved out, it's not fun if you get to the end of the driver and need to stop only to find you have no brakes.
