Horn wire!

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just looking for a little help here with regards to my horn!

Does anybody know what colour wire runs from behind the steering wheel to the horn without me having to trace it out? I know that I could just check nearer the horn but I'm not to sure whether the colour will be the same from start to finish!

Any ideas?

Sorry no idea of the colour .

Is your horn not working or is it something else.

(the horn needs a little effort to get to.)

Each horn (only treble horn tends to be fitted) has a black yellow wire leading back to the CECM (Central electronics) - no colour changes - no intermediate connectors.

Have you checked fuse 43?

The horn is fine! I'm fitting another horn on so I'm wanting to take the ground from the horn!

I'm guessing one of you guys will be able to confirm for me that the horn is activated via an earth connection, correct? Also I'm assuming there's a relay somewhere along it's path, any idea where that relay is as I'm gonna want to take the earth before that!

In the chance that I've totally got this wrong and the horn isn't activated via an earth could one of you explain how the horn is connected?

Thanks for your time guys, Darren!

You are entirely wrong :)

The ground from the horn is unswitched and goes to chassis ground. The CECM (central electronics module) does the switching and you need to run a second wire all the way back from the new horn to the CECM. You also need to run an earth from the new horn to the chassis ground.

Seems like a little more effort than it's worth. Maybe I'd be better off running it to a seperate button in the car!

So how would I go about connecting a secondary horn?

Just another question as well. Where is the cecm? I don't fancy tracing the wire! I haven't done my homework on it yet as you can tell!

You already have a H2 treble horn so you need to buy the H7 bass one. The part number depends on the VIN. The CECM is located under the dash above the driver's knees. It should take less than an hour to mount the new horn and run the wires.

Some owners have ditched the original horn, replaced it by a relay with a new fused supply for the aftermarket horn(s). If you do something like this you MUST use a protection diode or the CECM can be damaged.

I changed my crap horn for a two tone horn and all I did was use the existing horn wiring from the removed old horn and connected it to the new one. I did nothing with new relays or diodes just a very quick swap. Never had a problem at all.

This is the horn I used, paid £10 less at the time.

Unfortunately, others have not been so lucky. There is a technical note regarding horn replacement/adding bass horn for this very reason.

Really, what's the reasoning behind it? Do you have a link to the note? I would have thought it was a straight forward swap, interesting

The wire to the treble horn is only 1mm. This is why cars with both a treble and bass horn have a separate wire for each horn all the way back to the CECM where they are connected together.

Most auto electricians would see the small wire and add a relay, but back emf from the relay can apparently damage some CECMs hence the diode across the relay coil. I've drawn out the circuit required for Darren and put it here http://www.s-tech.demon.co.uk/horn.jpg

That's got me thinking now. I wonder if any damage would have already occurred and what I should look out for. Thanks for the explanation, appreciated. I may nip it to a sparky and get it looked at.

Am i missing something here?

Iv never heard a two tone horn, but whats wrong with a normal one? It doesnt sound that bad does it?

I think iv only used mine a hand full of times since i got the car anyway haha.

"but whats wrong with a normal one?"

Sounds like a kazoo from a Xmas cracker!

It is the only thing I've found I really don't like about the Fabia. If I had time, I'd rather drop the window and shout a warning than have to use it.

Pity changing it for a bassier version sounds such a faff for the non-electrical types like myself.

Up-side is that whenever it does get used, it brings a smile to the faces of those who hear it - admitedly for the wrong reasons.

Horn that has been replaced is on a vRS,

are all Fabias sounding the same, or are some of a different tone.

I never sound horns, except to check they work before a vehicle goes in for a MOT.

...but whats wrong with a normal one? It doesnt sound that bad does it?...

Usually 'the horn' is actually two - a treble and a bass horn, but in much of Europe only the treble horn is fitted to these cars. It's surposed to be less invasive/irritating to home owners, etc.

It's known as a city horn but most owners describe it as something that rhymes with that.

"Is my horn broken" and "can you do something to improve the horn" are very common questions.

Haha. I see.

I hadnt noticed tbh. I rarely use it anyway. And when i do im shouting at somebody, so i havent taken much thought to the note haha

Maybe just fit a Dixie horn instead? Take all of the rag out of road rage. Everybody would just laugh instead...

I want a horn like the one out of Dukes of Hazard, would easily brighten up my day!

The original horn is very clown like and not very loud or particularly effective.

Like most I have hardly used it but when I do I want it to reflect my mood.

If the car reflected my mood when i pressed the horn, itd have those razor blades come out of the wheel hubs like James Bond has hahs

And bananas out the back like Mario!

Black / Yellow wire (presumably from the horn button via the CECM?)

Where did the Brown / Black wire go?

What is the value (electrical) of the diode?

As a related question (two actually . . . sorry about that :() where is the existing horn mounted and how does one remove the upper grille on the vRS (to  gain easier access to and facilitate the removal of the vRS badge)?

The horn push is just an input to the CECM, which can sound the horn independenly of the horn push. In some markets it enforces anti-lean (horn only sounds for 1s if you continue to hold it down) and in other markets it is used as the alarm sounder. The black/yellow wire is the horn output of the CECM.

The brown/wire joins to the loom earth which ends up at the earth point on the longitudinal chassis leg.

The diode is relay dependent, so it's best to buy a relay with protection diode built in - see

Thanks for that; somehow I can't see the Skoda range doing well in Egypt, India or Italy if they can only sound the horn for one second! ;)

I have a pair of Ring two-tone horns and associated relay from a car that I no longer have.  Can you tell me whether this would work on a Fabia vRS and if the relay would be likely to include the appropriate diode?  I have attached a .PDF of the instructions that came with the kit.

ps - why would the CECM want to sound the horn independently of the horn push?  Just for the theft alarm?
