OBD

Featured Replies

Hi folks, i have an OBD reader which i use with EASYOBD software, it reads and clears fault codes on my MK5 golf but for some reason on my Fabia 1.2 (2003) it fails to connect at the 'Vehicle OBD Compliance' stage.

These are OBD2 as opposed to CAN-BUS aren't they?

I'm aware that VAGCOM is the superior diagnostic tool but i simply wanted something to fault find on the engine and it does the job for me.

I used to have VCDS lite with my TT.

MK1 Fabia is not Canbus unlike the MK5 golf, if the reader you have only reads canbus then it will not be able to connect to the Fabia.

My Mk5 golf is OBD2 not CAN-BUS.  I did think they were both OBD2 and it seems you've confirmed that they are, not sure why it fails the OBD compliance test though.  Back to the drawing board

MkV golf is definitely CAN-BUS.

I've scanned SWMBO's old Golf V and my Fabia with the same dumb cable and VCDS lite. Can't scan her Yeti though as I get the same error.

Obd2 and can bus are two different things. All cars should comply with the obd2 but that only covers the engine, airbag and abs controllers for basic fault codes and information. Can bus or k line is used to access other controllers and provide full information on the controllers above.

I'll bow to your superior knowledge, i don't really know the differences to be honest, i was told the MK5 Golf was OBD2 and my newly purchased OBD2 reader (cheap one) works hence discounting the CAN BUS.

It doesn't like the Fabia though which we've confirmed is OBD2.  Strange.

Can you access the central electrics or central convenience module on the golf?

With the fabia, unplug the battery for say 30 mins, reconnect and try again.

Ahh right, in that case i doubt it, it a cloned ELM 327 which i'm using with the free version of EASYOBD2 software.  Thinks its for basic engine diagnostic and code clearing capability.

Like the cheap kkl cables it will use a serial connection to talk to the car, this needs good synchronisation between the car and cable or errors occur. Also some controllers are rather picky in how they communicate. If you're having problems one option is to slow down the connection speed to give a more reliable connection. I'm not sure how or whether you can do this with an elm 327.
