files still visible on sd card

Featured Replies

Why does this happen? I have been tagging all my music files so album art appears on screen. Amundsen/Canton. Some of the files I have deleted via card reader on my Mac, as the tagging did not work.

When I slot the SD card in the car, I can still see all the deleted files in track list order with red slashes across them, obviously telling me that they are no longer there, or corrupt in some way. But why are they still showing up??

This also happened when I loaded all the radio station logo's onto a memory stick to allocate. Too many to search through, so I binned a load off the stick on the computer and they showed up as well when I plugged the stick into the USB port in the car.

Stupid,or is it me??

When you delete them on your mac you need to empty the trash can too or they'll still on the card, although not visible in OSX.

Cheers, I will have a try. Just burnt out the bloody card reader by leaving it in the damn USB port over night, no longer shows up, even in disk utility. What tagger do you use? I have downloaded the free Tagger http://bilalh.github.io/projects/tagger/ A bit basic, but it works, MOST of the time, although I am not entirely sure how and it gives limited info and control. Can't complain if it's free I suppose.

I also got a card from these guys. Dirt cheap and it works fine..

You get a lot of hidden files bunged on the SD card with a mac too.  You'll need an app that deletes them all and ejects the card afterwards, otherwise they show up all over the place and are a pain in the arse.

Well, tried emptying the trash and it's made sod all difference. Still get duplicated files on the card. I will try the metadata clean.

Are you using a Mac?  Do the duplicate files have a dot (full stop) at the beginning then exactly the same file name as the music file?

Don't know about a Mac as I use a Windows system based computer but can't you reformat the SD card in the computer? That will wipe all data off it.

Ok so the issue I suspect you are running into is that almost all devices such as columbus etc etc is setup to use cards written in windows.  Unfortunately unix, including OSX, uses a different file naming standard.

In Unix all file names begining with a . are automagically hidden, windows does leave hidden files all over the file system (or your SD card) as well it's just that most devices are setup not to show them.

The simplest way to solve this issue is the format the card and copy all the data on using a windows machine.  There are ways to sort this on a mac but the "easiest" way I know of is to use the terminal.  If you'd like I'm happy to give you a hand.

Looking on google it might be worth using something called blueharvest on the mac.  I've not used it myself but there's a fair number of reviews online.

Tried that, it's reformatted FAT 32, reads fine in the car, that's not  the problem.

Cheers,

What do I type into the terminal?? Might give it a go. The blue Harvest is available on a free trail, thats another option.

There's a blueharvest lite version too which is available in the mac app store which should be just fine for what you need.  The full version can automatically clean disks connected to the mac, whereas you have to select the disk with the lite version.

Harrysprout I was stuck at work last night till late and I'm back again so on my phone. Once I get home tonight I can grab my laptop.

What files is it specifically that it's showing, is it the music file names with a . On the start or is it .trashes .dsstore .spotlight etc? Also what is the exact (upper/lowercase spaces etc) name of the sd card on osx - shows in finder.

Hi mate,

Unfortunately I cant check right now. My wife is out in the car. Pretty sure I saw a .trashes file along with others which were the names of the tracks, not sure of the suffix on these. Will have look.

Thanks

Right, she is back and just put the sd in the car.

I have saved my music files in folders, named as albums. I select a folder open and I get the track listings twice. The first 11 tracks of a 11 song album have the suffix dot underscore. IE..   '._songname.mp3'. These are all unplayable with red slashes through them. The playable tracks are below, and don't have the ._ suffix These are OK.

Above the album folders I have three other folders named-

.fsevenstd

.Spotlight-V100

.Trashes

Think I might have sussed it with blue harvest. Will check in the morning. Wouldn't mind sussing it with terminal though.

Cheers

Hope this helps :-)
