Octavia vRS PD170 (BMN) Turbo Noise

Featured Replies

When accelerating the turbo has a slight whine/howl (somewhat like a distant police siren) and seems to lack boost until it comes in at 2000rpm.

The engine bay has a little soot residue around also, I have just replaced the complete Inlet Manifold and gasket.

The turbo is only a couple years old, covered 30-40k max.

Is this a sign that it's on it's way out?

Thanks

Nobody got any ideas? I personally thought general rule of thumb was if you heard police then the turbo was on its way??

mines got a faint whistling noise on it, you can hear it when it comes on boost about 2000 rpm and its fine, ive had turbo noise on my old Fabia VRs and on this Octy since ive owned it.. covered over 30000 miles with it doing it... generally not something to worry about

Only thing that worries me, it's only started doing this lately and it's Stage 3 and used to boost anywhere from the low 1000s right round, now it can barely pull up a hill between 1500-2000rpm without needing to drop a gear to get it to 2000rpm +

Slightly worrying...

mmmm, putting that much stress on a turbo thats not supposed to run that power may be shortening its life, id maybe not worry just yet and start looking at things like the EGR needing a clean etc, may help.

Egr is blanked and removed from the map, its just had a new inlet and a good cleaning. So all that is safe for sure. Its running about 230bhp so it could just be a shortening of its life problem... I'll just have to keep an eye on it... don't want any metal in the engine.

It might be a crack in the housing or compressor... might be a boost leak, maybe a gasket...
