A small fix to the operating system or any other program on your computer.

 

If anyone get that call centre telling you they "need to fix your computer".

 

Tell them "oh I need your pubic IP to let you through my firewall".

 

Laugh in a sinister manner, hang up, then post it here.

With the latest change to Windows 8.1 Update 1, the system requirements have actually gone down to 16GB disk space and 1GB RAM, though it will obviously work better with more.

I find Windows 8 runs better than 7 in general and it's particularly noticeable on lower performance hardware, the old Atoms are a bit sluggish on 7 but they're quite usable under 8.  I don't like the touch/Modern side of it even on touchscreen PC's but it doesn't take long to get rid of all that, it's even easier if you use a third party tool like classicshell.

Especially with windows 8.1 - it really is no more than 5 mins work to bypass the Modern tile screens completely, less if using classicshell or similar.

When I upgraded to 8.1 it's changed to going straight to the desktop and the left mouse pad menu that used to pop up has gone

As I understand it, the biggest problem with Win8 is it DOESNT MULTITASK PROPERLY; so of course it will run faster, it only has a tiny fraction of the background tasks going that a WinXP, Vista or Win7 box might have.

Not noticed any problems with Windows 8 or 8.1 multitasking, seems to do it just fine. I use Windows 8.1 in the business environment and have upwards of 20 applications open at the same time across multiple monitors.

 

With the latest 8.1 update you can now boot straight to desktop by default, and it's now the default setting. Metro apps also show in the desktop taskbar so switching between software is easier now than before. Also now added is a shutdown button directly on the start screen, so no fiddling to get at it either.

From my understanding, windows 8/8.1 uses a similar multi tasking process to Linux/Android.

Resources are prioritised, and not everything listed in task manager is actually open and running in the background consuming resources.

As I understand it, it only runs 4-5 tasks at a time, everything is time-shared the way it was on early 286/386 rigs.
