2006 Octy vrs 2.0 tfsi, cold start problems

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've had my mk2 vrs for four years now which until the last few months has been relatively trouble free upto it's current 74000 miles.

However, over the last week it has developed a cold starting issue. First couple of mornings it made a camshaft type rattle/tick for 2-3 secs once it fired then it would clear. As the week has gone on it also fired on 3 cylinders a couple of times, sometimes with this rattle, sometimes without. As we've had a lot of fog during the week I'd estimated the misfire could be down to dampness/poor plug condition and I thought a bottle of engine flush with an oil change might help the rattle.

Yesterday I figured that I'd treat it to a home service, changing the plugs, oil and air/oil filters in the process. Initially after the service it started quietly and ran smoothly. However, yesterday evening I needed to use the car after it had been stood for a good few hours and the rattle/tick was back as was the misfire, again only lasting for 2-3 seconds then it appeared to correct itself.

I did a search on the net last night and found a scirocco 1.4tsi owner that was complaining of the same noise without the misfire which had been diagnosed with something like a knackered camshaft adjuster solenoid, but not sure if this would' be the same on a 2.0tfsi.

Anyone got any experience of this?
