Low oil pressure on start up

Featured Replies

Hi got oil light flashing 5/6 times when i turn ignition on indicating low oil pressure. Going to change oil to castrol edge 5w30 as opossed to the asda 5w30 i had in also the filter. Any other ideas or had anyone had this problem before?

The pickup pipe in the sump is probably where the problem is(probably blocked).I'd check/change that when you do the oil change and I'd do that asap.

Cheers for reply just waiting on the oil will update when done

I've had an oil pump failure on mine at about 90k miles. I'm not sure how much they are but just while the sump is off to replace your oil pick up it may be worth fitting one. Either that or you could end up taking it all to bits to change the pipe only to find the pump has failed when you get it all back together.

Needless to say dont drive it!

How will i know if its the oil pump? Is it worth just doing it anyway as £££ a slight issue as getting married in couple of weeks:(

if you have never done it, then replace the oil pickup as a matter of urgency. Blockage on the MK1 Octy vRS is very common and it will only get worse leading to total engine failure. The oil pickup assembly is very easy to replace and will save heartache later when the engine seizes due to oil starvation.

Oil brand is irrelevant in the scheme of things. Asda do not make oil, its made by one of the big players which could even be Castrol and could therefore be the same oil you are waiting for.

Try and avoid driving the car if at all possible, then when you replace the oil change the pickup at the same time.

In addition to the pickup you'll need a sump pan gasket.

Almost certainly a blocked pick up pipe. Very common. Do not let the engine run with the oil pressure illuminated. You will be causing irreversible damage.

I would put the wedding off and get your car sorted first buddy!! Only joking. When my oil pump failed the work was done at my Skoda main dealer. On the receipt I remember they had carried out a pressure test and it had the results on it. I'm at work at the minute but I'll have a look for it tonight and let ya know what it says.

How did you know ur pump had failed? Some posts say almost certain pick up pipe....? Wouldnt i have low pressure all the time not just when i start car if was pump? Car costing as much as bloody wedding!!

It actually makes me think that your oil needs changing to a correct viscosity known brand name synthetic. Old oil has a higher cold viscosity than fresh.

What oil would you reccomend using? Tps leicester recomended castrol edge 5w30. As it is now it has asda 5w30 in. Now u say it seems to make sence as the mechanic i normally use said something about an oil containing some sort of mineral cant really remember
