A bit of 'growl'

Featured Replies

Hi guys

As a 67 year old owner of a new Fabia VRS (3200 miles on the clock) I am SLIGHTLY dissapointed at the 'noise' it makes. I would really like it to 'growl' a bit - both on tickover and when running. Is this possible? I am now a poverty-stricken pensioner - but LOVING the VRS!! - so can't afford an expensive 'fix'. Back in the 60's - as a 'Mod' - I had a Lambretta scooter which sounded ****. I drilled 4 holes into the silencer and problem solved! I suspect the same solution on my VRS might not comply with current 'regulations'!!

You lot have answered SOOO many issues already for me, so I'm sure someone has an effective (and cheap!!) solution to this - I want my new toy to 'burble' like it means business!

I will, in all seriousness, suggest one easy fix: Have you tried getting out of the car? Now what I mean is I also thought it was very quiet until the first time my wife arrived in it to pick me up from work. It was funny, because I heard a nice, deep "growl" out of my window and thought "that sounds nice..." and looked out only to see my own car sounding like that! Point is it's sounding much more silent from the driver's seat, even with windows open, nothing close to what people are hearing as you pass by. Now every time she takes the car I take the chance to hear the exhaust doing that "vrrrroooom" as she drives away (and that's not even more than 2000 rpm).

Of course, it can certainly be louder if that is what you're after but for me, what I heard once being outside of the car was exactly how I would have liked it to sound, no more than that though.

Cheapest option is getting someone to remove the centre section on the exhaust. Best option is a complete replacement exhaust system. Neither are going to be warranty friendly though as its obviously a very important part of the engine!

cheap and effective but probably no help at all

I laughed more than I should have at that  :giggle:

Ignore. tapatalk messed up.

Too funny!!!!

I disagree!

It's sole job is to reduce the noise of the engine, it has no other affect really.

The engine is not powerful enough to be affected by a slight reduction in back pressure.

Fair enough if your car is still in warranty, the only warranty it voids is for the exhaust. Don't be put of by it causing problems. Plenty of the lads with Seat Cupra'sand Polo GTI's have done it with no issues.

Have a look at page 18 and how the Supercharger is packaged to reduce that lovely noise.

You will need to go down the exhaust route to cheaply and easily get the noise you want.

But first off, checking how it sounds as someone else drives it away from you, and passed you is a good idea.

I've not heard one with it done but a lot of people say the cheap fix option is to remove the centre silencer.

The engine is not powerful enough to be affected by a slight reduction in back pressure.

Agree with most of what you typed Al, however a decat or race cat will give performance gains.

I also had this confirmed as being brought about by the change in hardware as stage 1 and stage 2 maps vary very little, mostly stage 2 is mapping out the ECU warning light brought on by the car thinking the cat has vanished.

Corrected ;)

ECU? What?

Remove the centre muffler/resonator as the others have said, job done!

I've had the silencer removed in mine, it makes a nice deep sound as it should from standard! Plus the crackle is a lot louder on the up change. Well worth it!!
