creamy gunge on oil cap

Featured Replies

Hi, l have a question, there's cream coloured gunge on the oil cap and dip stick of my VRS, I'm suspecting the head gasket but I've been told this can also be due to only doing short runs(which I only do), can anyone shed any light, cheers x

If you do actually do short journeys then that will be the cause so don't panic. Take it for a long blast to get the oil mixed properly. Check your dipstick for any water and that should give you a clue if you have a problem with your head gasket, do you lose any coolant or have any oil in your expansion bottle?

+1 I do short journeys on mine during the week, it's happens more in cold weather due to condensation. I always take the car on a good run at the weekend to get everything moving and it gets an oil change every 8-9 months to be on the safe side. Probably overkill but I like to look after it!

Thank for us replays, we're going to Edinburgh at the weekend and we were going to take my husbands van but I think we'll take my car because it's needing a good run, hopefully that will sort it. Xx

Are they for me? :P

Since when? Today? lol

As above, probably just condensation, but check your breather pipes and make sure they're not blocked up

Will do thanks x

How short is short?  I do a 6 mile journey each way to work and never had this

I do a 6 mile round trip to work too and i also dont suffer this... But i do absolutely cane it on the way to and from, working nights gives you quiet roads

I only do 7 miles each way for work, and about 40 at the weekend. I don't have this problem. This is why I suggested checking the breather system.

I a few cars at work that collect a lot of condensation, but they normally only get used about 10 miles a week.

I used Mobil 1 0-30 oil once had the mayo effect on oil cap.

Changed oil to castrol magnatec now use quantum and not had an issue since.
