Upgrading to mk2 fab

Featured Replies

I am thinking of selling my mk1 fabia vrs and getting a mk2 in monte carlo spec. I cant decide what engine to go for, the 1.6 diesel or the 1.2 turbo. Can I have peoples experiences and thoughts, I only do about 50 miles a week.

If your only doing short miles in the long run petrol is probably your best option. I have the 1.2 and it has more than enough pull to satisfy my needs. The 86/105 can get remapped (if you wish for a little more poke) to around 120. Apparently they are exactly the same engine wise, same turbo the lot.

With your lower mileage I'd stick to the petrol.  Less expense and you don't run the risk of the dreaded DPF blocking up!  The Monte's are very nice looking cars.

Thanks guys. I like the idea of diesel for the torque but realise I don't do the mileage. I prefer the monte to the vrs in terms of looks.

Careful, you might spark a whole debate ;). Haha.

He has got a point.  I've just bought a VRS and still prefer the exterior look of the Monte lol!  Deciding factor was the power output.

I prefer the monte too, the looks and engine.

But shh. I might make some of the vrs drivers angry haha.

From what I've read during my short time on this forum many of debates involve you don't they ;)

OP, any reason why you are not considering a VRS this time round? Just curious.

What's the reasoning behind the change?

Just after something newer and nicer?

Are you set on sticking to Skoda?

Seat do what Skoda won't and put the CR140 engine in their small hatch, which in my opinion is the natrual upgrade from a PD130 mk1 VRS.

Just made the change over to an Ibiza FR myself and can't say I regret it.

I said at the time if Skoda put the CR140 in a Monte i'd have had one of those instead but they don't so i couldn't.

Something like this one

Rest assured, the 1.2 turbo is excellent - it is in my Yeti, anyhow.

Quiet, powerful and almost 40 mpg in a heavier and less aerodynamic car.

As above, low mileage and diesel can be a problem AND you pay more for the car!

We LOVE Fabias as can be seen in my avatar photo on the left. Our family 'Fabulous of Fabias'.

In response to the many questions. I prefer the look of the monte over the vrs. Just personal taste really. I would like something a bit bigger and not as basic as the mk1, the interior feels cheap and bland. I would quite like to stick with the skoda as I dont want to pay the premium for a vw or audi badge. I think the small petrol turbo would be best as I only commute a few miles each day. Or I am going to spend less and get an evo 6, but that is not as realistic as the monte.

50 miles per week??? - Petrol definitely.  CR Diesel with DPF out of the question!

This is why I'm being careful ;). I usually get followed by 'gone phishing' who likes to join me in abit of banter. Its all good fun ;). HAha.

Hmm i dont plan on having another new car for a good while. I want my HTP to last. I'm not sure a vrs engine (or whichever engine number its got in when the warranty runs out) would satisfy me mate.

Even if it did turn out to last a good while, id be worried to run one out of warranty, just incase. Iv heard enough horror stories haha.

Anyway. Sorry to go abit off topic there :).

The mk2 is not that much of a step up in quality really.

At 60 miles per week I'd get the EVO and enjoy yourself. It'll depreciate less, even if it does cost more to run.

If you do go for a Monte I'd suggest the 105bhp 1.2 petrol, but try to find one with Climatronic as it removes the three big cheap plastic heating dials and modernises the dash a bit right in the eyeline. (IMO of course)
