Which model to go for?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My Fabia mk1 is due to be replaced within the next year, I've been so impressed with it I want to get another Fabia. Now I do 60 miles a day mainly back roads and I do this 6 days a week so I want something to get me from A to B, as I'm only an apprentice I will be looking at under 5k and fuel economy is high on my list. I've heard good things about the Greenline models. What do you recommend?

Many Thanks

I would be inclined to wait until the new range is announced officially, used models will probably be available cheaper then.

1.4 tdi - from the last generation of relatively bombproof diesels, fairly torquey, amazing fuel economy, just very noisy as it is an old tech 3 cylinder diesel!

I've read the Greenline is no more efficient in real world conditions than the 1.4 or 1.6 diesels. It sounds like it has been designed for economy in urban conditions. I.e. London - no congestion charge I think?

Ahh right okay yeah well I was planning to wait a bit probably until November then see what's about but the 1.4 seems the engine to go for then

I averaged 78mpg in my Greenline over 20,000 miles in one year commuting in and out of London.

You just have to drive it economically in a certain way that the 1.2 engine likes.

Most of that was flowing open road too, not stuff in traffic as my driving is 80% A roads/M ways and 20% town.

That's real MPG, not from the display, which was 80+.

Couldn't get more than 64mpg out of the 1.6 diesel.

Wow that's great MPG considering I will be doing about 20k a year at that mpg I could cut my fuel bill from 3000 a year in the fabia mk1 to 800 in a Greenline.

How does the Citigo compare in mpg?

Doing the same driving my Citigo averaged about 55mpg.

The secret to the Greenline is keeping it to 62mph tops and getting the gear changing right so it doesn't labour.

If you don't change down when needed it'll just throw fuel through the engine as it drops off the turbo efficiency band.

I worked my economy out of the fuelly site.

Best I ever got was in the 80's.

I couldn't get it under 60mpg driving like a complete berk.

Yet others I've seen on here have struggled to match the figures.

I put it down to being happy cruising with lorries and doing most of the driving on open roads.

I had the estate.

I wish I`d kept my mk1 1.9SDI. Its slow (0-60 in 18.5 sec) but so reliable. My son has it now and 10 years on and 130k, its never let me or the boy down. It was great to drive around town and chugged along at 70 or 80 on the motorway. My current 1.6tdi has had 2 warranty claims (O2 sensor & egr vavle). And a mystery breakdown that righted itself after a rac recovery and 2 days rest. Warranty runs out soon and I`m worried about the cost of these happening again.

If anything happens to my current fabia I think I will look for another SDI.

I'm surprised that's all from the Citigo. Yeah well the roads I'm travelling down will mean I will struggle to exceed 62, I think it'll be a Greenline estate when the MK1 goes!

The Citigo is a good car, but it's a naturally aspirated small capacity petrol.

So to get any kind of performance, or to accelerate up slip roads I found you need to rev it quite hard.

The 75 model hits it's peak bhp just over the rpm redline!

I suspects this effected my economy and I might have got close to 60mpg in the Citigo.

The Citigo is a little quicker to 60mph.  But it's such a small difference you wouldn't notice it.

As an all round package with 5 seats and a large boot I just prefered the Fabia.  Feels more solid too.

It's not as much fun to drive though, although you do appreciate maintaining momentum through corners on it's lowered "Greenline" suspension which I believe is the same 15mm drop as the option sports suspension was.

For a local runaround I'd favour the Citigo as it's more fun, but for a mile muncher I favour the Greenline.

All my own opinions of course, having had both. :)

As a final thought I found the Greenline more comfortable, mainly because I am tall and the Fabia has a reach adjustable steering column.

Something the Citigo lacks to keep it light.  That's the main reason I sold it after 3 or 4 months.

I only sold the Greenline after a year/20k miles because my Wife had a Yeti and I liked it a lot, so I got one too.

Yeah I did look at the Citigo but thought at doing over 350 miles a week how long before I wanted something more comfortable and the lower mpg crossed it off my list leaving the Fabia Greenline which I like the look of most!

my GLII (1.2TDi) averages 65ish mpg, tank on tank, I have got into the 90's mpg on a couple of runs kent to brum at 56-60mph

it is a little noisy, but seems to have a lot more low down grunt than the citigo

the wifes citigo averages about 50-55mpg but shorter journeys, a the few long runs I have seen up around 70ish mpg but does not seem as powerful even though both engines are 75mpg

big differences are the citigo gets into 5th at about 35mph and the GLII about 45mph

citigo is smaller and quieter

neither citigo or GLII are now exempt from congestion charge as the limit was reduced to 75g/km last year (suspect dear old boris was losing to much revenue)

both are around 11p-12p per mile fuel costs, both are band A (zero road tax),

the citigo is slightly cheaper to insure than the GLII

the citigo 60PS is the same engine as the 75PS and the diffences is only right in the top third of the rev range, so unless you are reving the nuts of it there is no difference other than paying skoda more for the car (wife has 75ps and daughter has 60ps, and no difference)

also coming back to the GL, the 1.4 is the older PD engine, so factor in more regular cam belt changes etc, the 1.2 is the new CR (common rail) engine

as to your budget, do not rule out a new / nearly new car  as the PCP plans can make it very affordable, especially if you get it right wth the 0% apr or low rate finance, and the rate applying at the time you sign up is what you get no matter when you take delivery

Yes thank you well I have realised that it is to be the Greenline even if it exceeds my previous budget it will soon save me that figure in fuel costs.

The 75 model hits it's peak bhp just over the rpm redline!

Really? What good is that? Haha.

I never redline my cars. Having peak power beyond the redline just seems abit pointless?

Maybe its just my driving? Hahs

  • Author

Yeah I saw that and was thinking I couldn't put up with having to redline that

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Hmm no. Iv just looked on the skoda site

Peak power of the citigo 75 is at 6000rpm and peak torque is 3000 - 4300

My 1.2 htp 70 fabia peak power is at 5,400 and peak torque at 3000

Im tempted to test drive a citigo haa. I dont find myself having to rev my fabia too much though tbh. I never go above 5,000rpm (redline is at 6)

If you don't want to drive the Citigo hard you buy the 60bhp version.

Does that deliver its power at lower rpm then?

Does that deliver its power at lower rpm then?

Yes, the map is exactly the same as the 75 until about 4,500rpm or so, then it tails off and the 75 keeps climbing until the redline.

So in normal day to day driving they are pretty much the same unless you rev it quite a bit.

Ooh right i see. Thats interesting.

I bet they charge you a fair few hundred quid for that 75 map too?

Cheers :)

Well my MK1 is now building up a list of issues that aren't going to be cheap so I plan to pop to the dealers tomorrow to have a look

My GLII is only improving month on month...

IKetaJh.png

And that's plodding along the M4 from Swindon to J5 then some back roads and back home, 3 times a week, plus the odd stint in traffic at weekends getting across Swindon!!...

I had a Civic that gave me (at best) 45mpg. The Greenline was just at the top of my budget last August (yes I've done 15k miles in 8 months) but the Fuel saving and £0 road tax swayed me!! :)

(The 70.3mpg was today!! :D )

Very good stats there! Well I tested a used one today and I think it will be perfect for my needs

Can't recommend the 1.4tdi 3 pot enough, it's a cracker, yeah a bit noisy but as has been pointed out before its "characterful" !!

Makes some great sounds through the rev range that still make me chuckle, plenty of torque on offer, and from hours of research seem bombproof.

Currently seeing 68 mpg from mixed driving
