A tad late, but the damage to the headlight, was it to the tabs holding the headlight in place?

If yes, and they replaced the headlight, they conned you....the headlight is bolted to metal brackets with 3 plastic tabs. These tabs break off at the slightest bump. You can break off the tabs on the headlight, insert the repair kit tabs and bolt them on. Then refit the headlight and adjust. No need for a whole new unit. For almost all VAG-cars there is a factory OEM repair kit available. I had my boss reverse into me on the parking lot, he broke 1 headlight right off the tabs. The dealership quoted me a heap of money, including a new headlight. I had them refit the old headlight with the repair kit, and after the repairs I showed my boss the quote and the actual invoice, he was very happy. The repair kit was about 10€'s. Ofcourse make sure they test the old headlight for functionality.

A big reason why I didn't want a new headlight, they only replace the xenon bulb on the broken side...so you end up with a (subtle) colourdifference, or you have to shell out for a new xenon bulb yourself.

  • 2 months later...

Probably a tad late, and a bit of a thread resurrection.

Similar thing happened to me around 7 or 8 years ago when I was still riding scooters. I was driving along and this Ford Galaxy just suddenly slammed on the brakes in front of me for no apparent reason.
I was unable to stop in time, went into the back of him, very little damage done to my scooter, only the front mud guard cracked and not a scratch on his Galaxy.

We exchanged details, and left it at that... In fact I'd completely forgotten all about it until a year or so later a letter from my insurance company arrived in the post basically saying that the 3rd party had launched a claim.

I immediately contacted them to protest it and the lady on the phone was very nice and said that it seems rather suspicious that it's taken him over a year to lodge the claim and they were treating it with caution.... A few weeks later another letter that the claim had been thrown out.

There is something to be said of dash cam's pointing to the side,  late one night a few months back, as i was pulling out of the industrial estate where I worked I almost pulled out into an on coming Vauxhall Corsa as he was driving past at about 50mph (its a 30mph road) some break neck speed without any lights turned on... to make matters worse the car was black. Thankfully my boss was next to me at the time waiting to pull out into the opposite direction and witnessed everything.

Can those that have them recomend a good dash cam?

Www.techmoan.com has tested loads of dash cams. The current favourite is the e-prance 0803 camera which with gps is available on Amazon for around £70.

A few weeks ago, a 'White Van Man' seemed to adjust his van (small car type as opposed to Transit size) more to my side of the road when we met at a blind corner. He hit my mirror quite hard which folded in and also hit the window. Luckily my mirror survived, which was sheer luck. Especially since it is heated and also adjustable so I assume it would have been very costly if it did break.

His mirror was all over the road, so I am assuming that Skoda's mirrors are very solid. Crucially though the guy did not stop, so I followed him.

Only half a mile down the road he stops outside his works office. The first thing I said when I got out was 'You are supposed to stop when you hit someone else's car'. I go the usual smirking 'wide boy' routine. I explained to him that it looked like he deliberately drifted across to my side of the road, and was I was met with a tirade of abuse at that remark (expected I suppose), saying that he had his mate as a witness etc. etc.

When I pointed to my Blackvue 500, I said 'Well I have got a better witness than you mate!'. His smirk was soon wiped :D

I said to him that I was going to check my mirror for damage and check the footage to see if he did swerve to my side when he had plenty of room and if it looked like he did I was taking it to the police.

His attitude certainly changed at that point. The point is, if my mirror did not survive and I did not have video footage, I would be struggling to prove my story for insurance/prosecution purposes.

And when looking at the video...he certainly had more than enough room and it DID look like he made a subtle manoeuvre to my side more than he had to. MUPPET!

Too many smart arses on the road nowadays!

Love it when you manage to get one over on a smart arse, doesn't happen too often but it's a great feeling when it does.

If I leave the mini 0803 permanently plugged into the 12v socket, will it drain the battery when I'm parked up? Or does it recognise when there is no motion and go into a standby/parking mode?

Assuming that your power goes off when the ignition goes off, no. It'll power off after a short period. Ten seconds or so.

The 12v sockets in the superb are permanently live - so will the unit just keep on filming when I'm parked up?

Yes, if plugged into that. You could take a feed from the fuse box?

I am looking at getting this http://www.crashcatcher.co.uk/cc3/ it has both front and rear facing cameras, fits over the rear view mirror so leaves the windscreen clear of obstructions.

I started off looking at over-mirror cameras too, but couldn't find any with decent night-time recording (incl the crashcatcher). I thought the rear-facing camera in the crashcatcher just recorded the occupants?

It will, but it will also record what it sees through the back window.

Sounds good. Let me know your thoughts if you decide to get one.

Tough as troopers boots them VX's mate ;)

Still take comfort in that the Superb crumples as intended, at least it's a good thing that the energy is absorbed properly, you'll be thankful if you ever have one at 50 mph+

Unlucky with the crash, we've all been there, I did it to a brand new 405 back in the day, Mr Dilly Dally anchored on on an amber light on me, and there was the time a lampost commited suicide infront of me, no biggy it was also a French car as well, Renault Fuego, the worst handling sports car ever, in my case simply applying the brakes was enough to send it over to the wrong side of the road, I had choices, the post or the oncoming car,

Funny thing with that as well, I worked for the Renault dealer briefly, you guess why it was briefly :D wrote off their car which I'd gone to collect for a viewing, NO SALE, I later worked for a VW dealer who had a Fuego as second hand stock, it had to also be picked up for a viewing, I didn't drive it this time I stayed with the Jetta and when we later asked the salesman if he's sold it he replied, the blokes thinking about it he knows it goes well as it overtook him on the dual carraigeway on the way to see it :notme: , and the third was the LL of the pub I used bought a Fuego and wrote it off soon after very near where I'd come to grief, his crime was to simply drive round a 40mph curve and the back stepped out on it :swear: resulting in even more razor blade production materials being available from the re-cycling yard.
