Annoying clicking sound?

Featured Replies

Morning :)

My car has started making an annoying clicking sound, sounds like its coming from the passenger front wheel. It gets quicker as i accelerate. The only way to explain the noise is it sounds like Spokey Dokeys, the little plastic bead-like things you could get on the spokes of childrens' pushbikes. It's MOT is next month so i'm a bit concerned.

Any ideas please?

Thanks :)

Forgot to say its a 2012 1.6 Skoda Superb greenline lol

stone/something else stuck in tire ?

Chris

Could be a stone in the tyre, or an embedded nail. I've had that one before. I'd doubt its a stone in the brake disc shield as it would be a constant scraping noise.

Doesn't sound like a CV joint or anything. You'd get a clicking noise on full lock, usually more noticeable in reverse.

Yep, it'll be something in the tyre. I remember I once found a hex-head bolt embedded in a front tyre and all I could see on the outside was the flat of the head. It was plugging the hole so well the tyre wasn't going down at all but knew it needed fixing.

Both I and the guy at Kwik Fit were astonished to discover that it was a 75mm M8 bolt. Neither of us could work out how it had managed to end up where it did. If it was laying in the road, surely I'd have just run over it, so was it actually standing end-up on the head?

Weird.

It could be any of the above suggestions.

More seriously, it could also be a damaged ball race cage in the wheel bearing. I had that on a Rover Sterling some years ago after I hit a large pothole. That made a clicking sound which got faster as the speed increased.

If it is a damaged ball race cage, the car needs a new bearing as soon as possible, as complete failure would almost certainly allow the wheel to separate from the hub. Not the happiest situation, even at lower speeds.

I remember having a slow puncture several years back that was caused by a large nail and an entire 4mm Allen key in my tyre. Similar thing: how the **** did it get in the tyre?

Definitely sounds like something stuck in the tyre. But surely your not due an MOT until 2015 if your greenline is a 2012?

I've noticed something different today.... when i turn the wheel full lock to the right, thats when the noise will start and it stops the same way..... i believe the wheel bearing and possibly the shock on that side needs replaced, could it be anything to do with that??

The first thing i did was check the tyre for stones/nails but nothing. It had a bit of tarmac between the pad and disk before, thats a noise I will always recognise because it scared the cr*p outta me!! Lol

thank you for all of your replies though

If it happens when the steering is locked hard over right or left it could also be a driveshaft UJ that is on the way out. They usually identify themselves as the car will make the noise on one lock but not the other at low speed.
