Little bit of an uprated classic! 205 GTI MI-16

Featured Replies

Very nice!

I did wonder how quick it would be on the road.  Probably only weighs 800kg if that in total.  Engine probably around 150bhp at a guess.

Bird Navigates in one of these on 12 car rallies. It's pretty much identical performance to the Brisk Rover just as long as I keep on the VVC, otherwise the Mi16's lower down grunt will edge it away.

Really really have a soft spot for old peugeots,

Really need to get my 309GTi done at some point,

Altho i got offered a pair of red 205GTi's a few weeks ago altho one had a messy half finished turbo conversion done, it was a real shame to see them 2 just sat there in a barn covered in dust but i have to many projects on go

I'm a big fan of the 205 GTI but am never likely to own one now; they've either been badly modified or crashed!

From memory, the MI16 engine put out 160bhp in standard spec.

I would struggle to turn away such a task, especially if it was more a case of just needing a proper clean-up, rather than serious mechanical or bodywork being required..

Pics. Have a soft spot for these after owning a few. Wouldn't mind a tidy goodwood one.

The mi16 205's don't hang about. 170bhp in something with the weight of a crisp packet :)

A mates building one with a rally spec 1.9 8v on 40's ;)

Very nice indeed. Had a Miami Blue 1.9 GTi years ago. It was a great car at the time but probably not much cop these days against the modern hatchbacks. The newer Corsa VXR is making the same power as a standard RS500 Sierra!!

On the lines of classic cars and group b rally stuff, have you ever heard of the Dave Sutton motorsport museum? I'm fairly certain it closed a few years ago but he had some great cars in there, including a black genuine factory Ford RS200 and a factory road going 205 T16.

Here's an old youtube vid:

The VXR is pushing the same a a std Cosworth but the RS500 had 224bhp.

They are also now getting old as you are doing back to 1987 so your looking at a 27 year old car.

I would think a 205 GTi can still hold its own if driven well,.

Hold it's own, yes. You can also guarantee the Pug driver will have a much bigger grin :D

I don't think there would be any argument there!!!

Is it running throttle bodies? I saw one on Auto Trader about a year and a half ago, it was up for £3000 and had a Mi-16 engine, throttle bodies, lowered, uprated brakes and a re-spray. I'm sure it was running 190BHP.

I was so tempted at the time but I ended up buying my mk1 Golf

Owner told me as it was collected its only cammed so around 170bhp but is saving up for throttle bodies. :)

Nice bit of kit, my brothers got a GTi6 engined one with a Xsara VTS box and my god thats quick and still handles like its on rails, 3rd gear easily gets to an indicated (albeit on a 20 year old french speedo) 110.

So tempted to do mine, but still think I should keep mine standard and just make it minty fresh.

Very nice cars to drive, horrid to be in when they crash.

Have had several discussions with people about AXGTs converted to AX VTS power. Shudder to think how fast bit would fly off into the countryside in any accident.

Some of us here will have survived crashing off roads in these types of light cars. Some maybe several times.

(Those that never survived will obviously not be reading this).

Lots of the cars around will be back on the road from accidents minor or major over the past 30 years.

If we have crashed off the road and survived in bigger-heavier (maybe faster) cars,

we will remember how the car faired after the 'incident', often not very well,

but then we are still here to think back on it.

I never trust in the Euro Ncap Rating of cars as crash tested for on road accidents, as in front and rear & side impacts,

Leaving roads out of control at any speed in any car can be fatal.

You do not even know if they have functioning Air Bags until they deploy or not.

Yep I survived an accident in one of my Golfs. Rolled the car 3 or 4 times landed upside down in a ditch but walked away literally with a scratch.

My mate had a Miami blue 1.6 205 gti it was a lovely looking car but he ended up hitting a shop, not at high speeds but it completely annihilated the car.

I had another mate who had a mk2 golf, who hit a mitsi warrior that pulled out of a junction in front of him doing 70+. The car was a mess but all 4 of them walked away from it, 2 of them didn't have seat belts on. Very very lucky.
