THE first pikey mod? airbox trumpet.

Featured Replies

I remember this little pikey mod being discussed YEARS ago, although pikey wasn't usually a term to describe it.

Just been opening up my old PD100 airbox and the new PD130 airbox, to get the green filter in the new airbox. In the top of the PD130 box was a trumpet about 3" long, and I looked at it, wobbled it a bit (was a bit loose  ) and the thing just fell out, so I left it out.

I did the trumpet mod on my first PD100, a very long time ago, and had forgotten all about it until just now when I was swapping over air filters. :D Where's Matt? I think he was the original trumpet pikey mod instigator.

Got that was a long time ago.

It was. :D And I'd forgotten about it until I opened up my airbox just now. :)

I'd leave it in as it's job is to reduce turbulence as the air passes the MAF and goes to the turbo. With it removed it's likely to reduce airflow and therefore power. I read a good article on air intakes on a respected website (which evades my memory at the moment) They did alot of tests and found descreening the MAF helps but removing the trumpet hinders.

Might stick it back in again then. Trouble is it was so loose, it felt like it would just fall off at the slightest touch... :( Think I might "help" it stick back a bit. :D

I didn't notice any performance loss after removing the tube, quite opposite actually.. I thought the tube looked a bit restrictive, anyway it's very easy to put back if the need should arise.

Worth noting that on the PD100 this trumpet is approx 3" long and on the PD130 it is about 1.5" long and wider bore too...

I think the 1.4 TDI tube is similar to PD100, maybe the mod is not necessary on PD130 if the tube is shorter/wider though..

Ok, I've done some more testing and it seems that the trumpet is there indeed for a reason. I've noticed that the accelerator response became a bit jerky without the trumpet. Didn't notice it at first but after fitting the part back the difference was obvious. It's because of the turbulence like stated before: the airflow goes in pulses instead of a steady stream. So I fitted the part back although the car is clearly livelier at higher revs without the trumpet.

FabiaTDI said that the PD130 model trumpet is shorter and wider bore, however I couldn't find any part number for the trumpet in ETKA. Seems like you have to order the whole upper part of the box..?

Nice to see some testing. I just need to secure mine in better. I need to open up the airbox again to clean the air filter anyway tommorrow.
