Coolant system/overheating problems

Featured Replies

Hey,

I'm sorry to start a new post if thus has been covered, but after hours of searching and headscratching, I cannot find post which fits whats going on with mine.

As the mot is booked in for tomorrow, its quite urgent.

Ok, i'll try explain...

1. To start with, the heaters weren't getting hot, they were warm and seemed to lack the same blast as usual. Temperature stayed at 90 as usual.

2. Then, it started overheating when going faster than 50mph.

3. Replaced thermostat and bled system. Now warning light for control exhaust system is on constantly.

4. Radiator cold at the bottom, warm at the top. Top pipes are hot, bottom rad pipe cold.

5. Took new thermostat off and tested - does open.

So, i'm confused, please help.

Em

sounds like a plugged radiator or air lock to me

That's what I thought too, but after trying for 15 minutes to get the air out, nothing seemed to happen, a few bubbles came out, but still no joy. Tried back flushing the rad, nothing changed.

a puzzle ?  When you flushed the rad did the water run freely through it - did you do it with pressure.

Yeah it seemed to, I did it with a hose, so do you think there may not have been enough pressure to blast any dirt through?

Water pump sounds most likely to me.

Agreed maybe the pump but I would try to get the rad flushed first to show no blockages - cheapest/easy job first

I wouldn't bother because it's the water pump that's failed just as Tech1e says, anything else is called denial.

Look on the bright side, when was the timing belt last done? If it's only recently then whoever did it may still warrant the work assuming they swapped the pump at the same time and if it's getting close to it's limit then you get the belt done at the same time and it's no more expensive than it would have been anyway.

Hey found a leak from the metal coolant pipe that runs along the engine block. So now its turned urgent as the flush seems to have made it worse. If anyone has one or know where to get one asap please let me kniw I'm desperate!!

The timing belt was done not long ago with a new water pump, so not sure if this will have broken already, but hey you never know with this car.

Going to be Skoda for that part.

Water pump is easy enough to check. Look at the return to the header tank, when the engine is revved up you should get a nice steady return back to the tank.

Yeah its similar to that part, but that's a different engine to mine, so I'm guessing different part number. Thanks though, I have no idea what its called.

I think the water pumps ok as water does come back in when revved. Took the pipe off this morning and its got a tiny hole in it, so I'm guessing that was letting the air in.

Well the hole in the pipe is fixed, but still the heaters are blowing cold unless driving then they get hot. I've tried to bleed it a few times now and no joy really.

Ahhh the joys of motoring :)

Fabia's aren't well known for air locks but in the past i've resorted to bleeding on ramps with other cars that were just to make sure. A steep hill would do at a push.
