Radiator cooling fan replacement

Featured Replies

Took my Fabia 1.9 SDI in for a service at my local garage this morning and they are telling me that the the cooling fan is bent and needs replacing.

They are quoting approx £150 for a non genuine part (+ labour). Am I better off sourcing the fan myself and getting them to fit it?

That's not too bad really. A oem fan would cost near that new without labour

Used or ECP/Car Parts 4 Less (same company), I just put in the basic details of a 1.9tdi fabia and you're looking at £51.24 to £57.60 for an EIS from ECP for your car, you can pay £128.82 for a Hella if you want but no reason to.

Thanks both for quick responses.

I will probably get one of the cheaper parts off the Car Parts 4 Less site. The mechanic warned against driving in heavy traffic but I will continue to use the car before I get hold of a new fan.

Euro Car Parts (ECP) will be the same price and no delivery if you have one locally or call your local motor factor who should be able to offer something similar on a same day delivery, GSF for example or your local independent.

Ok many thanks

Just one other quick question: on the ECP site it states that the fan is for vehicles with air conditioning - which my vehicle doesn't have. Is this likely to be an issue?

I've got the same problem and same question!  Anyone got an opinion on whether this matters (see "millmeister's last post above)?  Also, any tips/links/pointers on how to replace the fan would be hugely useful.

Strange that CP4L and ECP appear to be effectively the same company, but that their prices for the same item vary so much (£51.24/£89.16)

Thank you!

Funny that you should revive this post because having bought what I thought was the right part from EPS (using their compatibility checker on Ebay) it proved to be the wrong fan. So I'm currently driving around fan-less.

I will probably get it replaced but having been stuck in traffic on the M25 a couple of times recently with no overheating issues, I'm wondering if there's much point.

Oh dear - have just ordered the part from CP4L, using a handy 7.5% discount code that I was awarded by email for delaying ordering until I had done similar compatibility checks!  Not such a good discount if it's the wrong part though.

My fan appears to have pretty much seized; it will move with a decent shove, but won't rotate freely.

I suffered an overheat at the weekend and pulled over in time to allow it all to cool down again.  Then I remembered the trick of turning on your heating full blast (windows open!) with max fan and watched the temperature gauge drop to normal almost immediately.  Not a great solution on a hot day, but it works.

Fan removal seems relatively simple if you have extremely flexible arm bones (3 screws and a power socket).  Not sure how I'll do it with normal human bones though.
