BKD Engine in an Octavia II estate - warm-up time?

Featured Replies

Good afternoon

I know diesels take longer to warm up than petrol engines, but I am wondering if some of my fuel consumption problems are the result of slow warm-up.

Mine takes about 5 miles/10 mins of reasonably steady urban driving before it comes up to normal running temperature (on the dashboard gauge) and the problem is worse when the air temperature is below 11-12C - is that about normal or should I do something about it, like change the water thermostat or of the air-sensors?

(did the thermostat on the wife's Golf Mk 4 2litre petrol at the weekend, and it made a big difference).

Thanks in advance.

That sounds about the same as mine.

8-10 minutes and the water temp gauge is up to 90°C or so.

Mine was about the same, about 10 minutes to get up to temp.

Thanks guys - so not much room to do some changes then  . OTOH, saves me the trouble involved

Yes sounds perfectly normal to me too.

After years of owning/driving diesels of various types I borrowed my sister's petrol Fiat recently and was shocked how quickly it warmed up!

About 10 mins here too, longer in the freezing weather, I missed my petrol Subaru in the winter, but don't  miss the 26 mpg!

I bought a Heko grill cover and it helped warm up in very cold temps.

Mine's the same, Takes a while to warm up.
