I always lusted after an Interceptor,  always wanted tell a girl  ----- "I'll pick you up in my Interceptor"!

The Interceptor was without doubt the most unreliable car I ever had. If it wasn't breakdowns caused by purely bad design faults, e.g. Relays under the soft top which corroded because the drain pipe was too short and made of poor quality rubber causing soft top failure at the most inconvenient moment it was the "donuts" on the drive shafts that destroyed themselves at regular intervals due to the power from the engine it was general engine management faults which were the most annoying. BUT the sound of the 7.2 V8 still made it worthwhile although 8-10 to the gallon was a killer.

And a short list:

1989 - 1998: VW Polo 10 24 cc (use of)

1998 - 2000: ditto but donated by parents. Died at around 106,000 miles.

2005 - 2012: Ford Focus CL 1.4 (wife's) but maintained by....?

2012 onwards: Skoda Octavia PHD 1.9 2009 pfl

2014 onward: Skoda Fabia SE 1.2 for Mrs H.

Done.

Really not sure about a dream car although I love landie 110's.

2007 - Renault Clio RT 1.4 (J reg)

2007 - Fiat Punto S 1.2 (V reg)

2008 - Nissan Almera S 1.5 (03 reg)

2009 - Ford Fiesta Zetec S (07 reg)

2013 - Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0 (10 reg)

Dream car: Koenigesegg Agera R

Not that interesting:

FIAT Punto 1.2  - (not a bad car, used it to learn it, then sold it to my uncle. Still see it around town sometimes since he sold it)

Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v Comfort  - (very unreliable and never fully working. Went well and had some decent spec for a 17 y/o

Polo GTI - epicly reliable car. Needed less than £100 in parts over 3 years of hard driving

Mazda RX-8 (231) - awesome car. Not much fun on the highways due to lack of torque and never pushing it's handling limits. Lovely place to be though

Golf GTTDI PD150 - worst. car. ever. Terrible chassis and suspension, meh interior, shocking build quality, unpleasant engine and soooooo many problems. Sold to WBAC as no-one else would take it and I didn't have the conscience to sell it privately.

BMW 330d - best all rounder I've had. Decent on fuel, fast enough for most things and amazing handling for a family car

BMW E30 325i - mostly made of rust. Promises to be awesome once welded back together.

Dream car? Not sure. Maybe something like an e28 M5? Something old school and quite powerful. Or a 640d or something for everyday driving.

  • Polo Mk II 1.0 Fox (1993)
  • Polo Mk II 1.3 CL (1994)
  • Escort Mk VI 1.8 TDDi LX (1996)
  • Ka 1.3 Zetec (2004)
  • Ka 1.3 Endura (1997)
  • Punto 1.2 (1999)
  • Vectra 1.8 TD Saloon (1999)
  • Escort Mk VI 1.8 TDDi (2000)
  • Octavia Mk II Combi 1.6 MPI (2011)
  • Passat B5 1.9 TD (1997)
  • Fabia Mk I Elegance 2.0 MPI (2003)

Some belonged to SWMBO or shared between us. Favourite until we got the Skodas was probably my first Escort - first turbodiesel I owned and was a big step up from the old Polos. Got the second one as a cheap commuter years later and was a bit disappointing. Quite liked my Passat but needed lots of work and glad I replaced it with the Fabia. Worst was probably the Punto (with the infamous power steering, clutch/gearbox eventually borked and scrapped) or the Vectra, which was a total lemon (luckily Skoda dealer took it with only a cursory inspection!).

I always wanted a 911 growing up but dream car is a bit more modest now! Have lusted after a VRS (either kind) for quite a while, and once I have a garage I'd like a bit of a project to work on - Land Rover or an early Range Rover, Mini, or a VW bus maybe?
