Best way to improve headlights

Featured Replies

My headlights in my vRS are, well, shocking, so i'm just wondering if anyone knows the best ways (but not too expensive) to improve them! Thanks :)

asked so many times.

Osram nightbreakers, Phillips Extreme Vision etc.

Or, xenons (very expensive)

Are the plastic covers discoloured at all?

My bad :p aaaah great thanks, no the lenses look fine to be honest. But i'll check out those ones!

Or 65w osram rally bulbs.

Although they aren't road legal.

But much brighter than nightbreakers

On a Furbie you could probably use Nightbreaker+ on dip and the 65Ws on mains without any issues.

Or 65w osram rally bulbs.

Although they aren't road legal.

But much brighter than nightbreakers

100w are not road legal, 65w are, stupidly the legal side of things is based on watts not lumens and e markings rather than common sense.

Nothing at all wrong with a set of clear and properly adjusted fabia oem reflectors or projectors, they're a hell of a lot better than my bike's head light (no streetlights out in the middle of Northumberland between villages) and I rarely bother with full beam. After 13 years I finally replaced the oe bulbs with some H7 65w Phillips Xtreme Vision bulbs, they're whiter, brighter and while i'm not saying I believe the claimed 130% is life altering, but they are an improvement. So give your lenses/screen a clean, check that you've got the aim set correctly, feel free to spend a few quid on better bulbs and if that's no good then consider an eye test before spending any more money on the car, as we age our eyes react more slowly and we get worse night blindness with changing light levels, something as simple as yellow lenses can help a lot, just remember to take them off when you aren't driving or you will look strange :D

Hahah good tips, especially the eye test. but yeah i think some adjusting is in order and see what happens!

HIDs?

HIDs?

I'd laugh if I didn't think you were serious. Legality aside for a moment, retrofitted aftermarket HID kits in reflectors (even the R versions) are gross stupidity combined with zero consideration for other road users, they're also an invitation for the other party to claim they were dazzled by your non road legal lighting in the event of any accident and you have virtually no defense.

I don't see why people go mad when ever HIDs are mentioned on here! I have had mine in for ages now, and as long as they are aligned correctly, and your lenses are clean they aren't that bad. I admit there is a bit more light scatter with HIDs, but they are in the same locations as the halogen bulbs.

These are my HIDs Direct 35W 4300k bulbs, with which I have never been flashed

I'm not going mad, and I congratulate you on at least opting for 4.3k's rather than something higher, sadly that's about where it ends.

You've fitted a product that generates it's light in a pattern/shape and location that the reflector was never, ever designed for and by your own admission you're aware the beam is scattering all over but you justify this with 'I have never been flashed'. I know a man who was never convicted of car theft, still makes him a car thief. I'm a big fan of HID's, but in the correct setting and no matter how you spin it the way a filament bulb and an HID produce light is vastly different and your reflectors just aren't designed to deal with it. In projectors it's less of an issue but in reflectors it's just wrong.

Virtually every new bmw or merc I see have blinding headlights as standard so I say if it's good enough for them to dazzle everyone then so shall I. There's enough people with misaligned standard headlights blinding people so I don't feel bad for running hid's.

They're fitted with auto leveling and washers, think how much worse yours must be to them in situations where yours don't auto level and have crap on the front to further diffuse the beam, then consider that it's not just those in BMW's or Merc's with HID's who you annoy. Just for a moment think about what would happen if everyone was to do as you have.

The only figures I could find were a good few years old but light dazzling is attributed to several hundred accidents each year, if you're involved in one of them (and lets be honest you're basically giving anyone a great opportunity to shift the blame to you even if you weren't at fault) then best of luck explaining why you knowingly chose to fit HID's, i'd suggest you don't try and justify it in the way you do above as it probably won't go down that well with your insurer. While afaik they can't void your third party liability under EU law, they could refuse your claim leaving you with a repair bill and recovery costs etc. on the grounds you'd significantly misrepresented the insured risk and by fitting a non road legal lighting system that caused the accident, taken to the extreme they could even go after you personally for the third party claim.

Boooooooom someone is on it!

I didn't bother with a branded bulb, go on eBay and get yourself some ice white (blue bulb) h7 (normal headlight or dipped beam) and get an ice white blue bulb h3 full Monty beam. That will give a great white light in the dark and looks so much better than the standard candles. And get some chrome indicator bulbs too to get rid of the amber reflection! That little lot should come to about £15 and will make a big difference. You'll get a blue reflection in the day time too from the bulbs which is good in mine because it's a blue car :) led sidelights are an option I went for too. Go for smd multidirectional ones though if you do. That little lot should short you out for a tiny cost! :)

So annoying this isn't it -.- I agree with you
