2.0 TDi 125 kw DSG cracking sound when driving at low RPM

Featured Replies

Hello ! I have managed to make a video where it's easy to hear intense knocking sound when driving at low RPM (idle - selecting D and releasing the brake pedal only) . The sound starts around the fifth second of the video. It's pretty annoying "chattering". When I fractionally push the accelerator pedal, the sound just disappears (I am experiencing this issue at really low RPM ONLY). It is worth noting that once I gain some speed going downhill (the end of the video), the sound disappears again. The problem is showing only when going uphill or sometimes straight at low RPM.  As I said - as soon as I push the accelerator pedal (even just a little bit), everything is as it should be, the annoying rattling stops. The car has only 21.100 mileage (34.000 kilometers), however 1,000 miles ago the entire DSG gearbox has been replaced by a new one (under warranty). The original one was slightly "twitching" on the 2nd gear and sometimes even made a metallic sound when shifting, after replacing the whole gearbox, the new one shifts absolutely fantastic... When I visited my Skoda dealer and showed them the sound, they said that the sound is coming from the gearbox (not Dual mass flywheel as I was thinking) and that it is absolutely normal at low RPM even on manual gearbox (when releasing the clutch pedal without gas). But what is your opinion? Should I deal with this as soon as the car is under warranty? Do you think this is normal? By the way, under normal operation the sound is unnoticeable from the interior (with windows closed ). Thanks in advance!

I don't know but the garage are taking the Micky saying that's normal!

Mine is as quiet as a mouse when creeping at any speed and never has it made any noise like that.

Persist with the garage and get them to fix.

Hi, sounds like the DMF is tired and needs replacing. Same issue with mine at 120,000 miles. Think about 300 pounds for the flywheel.

Hope this helps.

Phil

Just been doing some reading and all reports seem to suggest it is the DMF.

Keep the pressure on with the garage. This should be covered under warranty at that mileage.

It is NOT a normal noise. They are lying.

The DMF on the DSG is pretty expensive.

In the UK they cost about £430! (RRP of £711.54.)
