DSG and towing

Featured Replies

Hi all,

..carrying on from an earlier thread in my hunt for a 1.4Tsi. ..have been advised of one that sounds promising but has a DSG auto box....just wondering if anybody could advise on a couple of points:-

...are DSG boxes OK to tow with?..(we only have a very small caravan...about 600kg)

...I am aware that there have been reliabilty issues with DSG's..any particular variant, and does anybody what type of DSG unit would be fitted to a 2010 reg 1.4?

...any advise gratefully received....

If you want to tow with a DSG, I'd suggest you consider the 6 speed variant fitted to the 2.0 TDI models (and 2.0 TSI petrol....but I think they are all vRS models).

The 7 Speed DSG fitted to the 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and 1.6 TDI has a reputation of being a bit fragile, and I don't think I'd tow with it.

The dry 7 speed absolutly perfect for towing, very very correctly predicted and correct gear changes, holds higher revs and lower gears than running solo.

BUT FFS

Do not EVER try and reverse uphill, even on the slightest slope.

Or indeed pull forward uphill out of an akward spot, i.e. trailer tightly in between other vehicles, and angled to the car.

A complete dysfunctional PIG, in these respects

Hi all...and many thanks for the replies.....particulalry the link...(which I had missed)...however after doing some more "googling"...I think I may stay with a manual.....too many problems listed. Would probably be fine on a new / company / warranted car, but I am looking at something around 3 - 4 years old that I will be keeping for 4-5 years and as much as i would love a DSG I can't really take the risk of having a high cost problem waiting to happen...
