Buy a car with a Towbar

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Need some advice Iam looking at a Octavia 1.6 diesel Elegance 2010 with 36k on the clock price £9k.

However it has a towbar which was fitted in 2012.

I have always been nervous of buying a car with a towbar on it as you can never be sure of the extra pressure its put on the engine.

Do you have any advice?

Just having a towbar on the car doesn't mean anything.. i have a towbar but its used as a bike bar as you can't fit a bike carrier on the hatchback..

I bought my Octavia 4x4 with 90k miles on it and a towbar. It was absolutely fine, no issues whatsoever with the engine, clutch or DMF.

I am fitting my new car with one too, just to use with a cycle carrier.

Are you not nervous about buying a car without a towbar on it and not knowing if it had one previously and was removed

before the car goes up for sale.?

A car towing has hardly put extra pressure on the engine, maybe on the gearbox and brakes and maybe the suspension.

You really need to buy cars as they appear and drive, you can not guess how the previous owners or drivers use and abused,

or gave loving care, attention and if the run them in well.

I do suspect that I need to change my view.

Is there anything I should look at for when looking at a car with a towbar?

you have to take it at face value, does it start drive and stop ok, as for the parts that are affected by towing the cluch being the only one I would say is worth worrying about,

your not going to take the box out to inspect it so if it drives ok then no problems,

after all the seller could have removed it and you would be none the wiser.

I did not go for the car as the engine sounds very knocky and tappy I know its a diesel it just seemed a bit much
