any info would be more than welcome

did you smear a little copper slip on the back of the pads at all?

  • Author

yes ive done that on both sides everything was fine i braked gently for the first 100 miles after that is when it started squealing again ive even had the pads exchanged for diffent pads and its still doing it

Sounds like you need to oil them.

Good squirt of 3 in 1 on the disc should do it.

Really?  If people don't know that oil is bad on the discs, should they be even attempting to do a safety critical job themselves?

NO. Oil on pad is not good.

wont that effect the braking i was told to clean the discs with brake cleaner before fitting

Dropped requoted bad advice

do NOT put any oil on the disc.

Yeah you should use brake cleaner on new discs to remove any grease or wax coating to stop them rusting in storage.

Put a chamferd edge on the corner of the pads to reduce squeaking. Also a small amount of grease or copper slip on the back of the pads and the edges that sit in the carrier will help.

I suspect a backing plate or similar might be causing your noise.

i took the pads back to the shop the guy said it could be the pads so he exchanged them for  a diffent set witch is chamferd edge but its still no change its still squealing

i did think about taking them off again and cutting a slit down the middle of the pads to see if that helps

So that's three sets of pads all squeaking?

Somthing isn't right.

at first once i changed discs and pads they was all fine i gently used the brake for the first 100 miles they been changed about 2 weeks now the squealing came back at the end of the second week

just dont know what to do or where to go from what ive all ready done

The brakes may be dragging. Caliper pistons are not sticking are they?

no there both fine the brakes release when i take foot off pedal

Hi Hawk. Take no notice of Benjamin, he's just 'havin' a laugh' - not sensible where brakes are concerned!

My Fabia squealed when I first bought it, as did my daughter's 9n Polo which has a similar front brake system.

I used copper grease as the above posters suggested but they still squealed for a time then stopped.

NOT a good idea to chamfer or cut grooves in pads for ordinary road use as you may well impair brake efficiency.

I was told that having a right angle edge to pads stopped any potential grit getting between pad and disc.

BRISKODA advice usually very helpful, sorry about the ' 3 in one' jibe above.

Diagram of front & rear if any good, thats fitted to my 2005 Fabia VRS..

A smear of copper-based grease on back of pads and on the brake-pad guides, should cure any squeal.

Can you pin-point which side that appears to squeal to confine where the problem lies??

I suspect some of the brake noise a lot of people get nowadays is the pad compound itself, specifically modern pads that have no asbestos in them. I changed the discs and pads 2 years ago on Mrs Loftys 206 GTi HDI for Mintex (both disc and pad) and they have squealed like hell since then, tried copperslip, all the usual tricks, they are just a squeaky pad. Use them hard for a few hours and the squeal goes off for a few days, then it comes back.

At least i can hear when she's coming home nowadays.....

To the OP, what brand of pad/disc are you using?

So that's three sets of pads all squeaking?

Somthing isn't right.

- Firstly, what are the pads and whata are the disks that you've purchased and fitted.

- Secondly try anti squal compound. You can get it from EBC and also Mintex/Pagid. It tends to either work and last or not work straight away.

- Thirdly, have you cleaned the disk surface with brake cleaner before you fitted them.

- Fourthly, did you clean the slides, calipers and all the rest appropriately before starting over.

- Fithly, did you brake pads have cloth/plastic shims on the back to reduce this vibration? The OEM ones and most none race pads do (for example EBC red is a "performance pad" and they do).

Some pads just squal until you have them bedded in.

Assuming everything is working fine, it might be a good idea to go onto an empty motorway and brake from 70 to 10mph a few times. (Approx 10 times, but if your brakes feel like they're working less effectively, stop the braking steps and go for a drive to let them cool down before trying again).

The process mentioned will basically bed the pads in quickly, but you must not sit with your foot on the brakes at any point of this and you must go for a drive after you have done it to allow everything to cool down.

If the brakes feel less effective, then your pads may be too hot or your brake fluid may have boiled. If this happens you have to take care and let it all cool down.

This means keeping suitable distances and speeds to take into account your ineffective brakes.

Also high quality pads will be chamfered at the edges and many have a single groove down the centre.

I'd never cut these into a pad that doesn't have them from the factory.

For example you can see the chamfer and groove here (These are random pads, not fabia ones):

And you can see the backing pads here:

Also the brake lube from mintex is this stuff:

To the O/P once again, try to get back to us with the brand of discs and pads you have been fitting please.

  • Author

iam not sure of what brand of discs and pads but i can sure find out

  • Author

the make is mintex

ive had the pads out again today ive cleaned all the caliper and cleaned the discs again on both sides and recopper sliped back of the padsand where the pads sit on the caliper and they are still squealing when iam braking

Edited by Hawk1976

Same as my other halfs car then, those were Mintex.

I suspect your problem may be as much the discs as the pads themselves, I fitted Gen pug in the end - that cured mine.

Try the braking bed in method I mention and if they still sqeal after that the it's the pad/disc combination.

Pads do squeal while bedding in onto disks.

how long does it take to bed them they have been on a car a few weeks now but i did take the pads back to the shop and they replaced them

I fitted Pagid discs and pads and have had no problem at all with squealing.
