coilover advice

Featured Replies

im thinking about putting some coilovers on my mk1 vrs, as I have got some 18" wheels for it.

what is the best set up I can get for £500

im not planning on going stupidly low just say arches at the top of tyres.

My vrs is on weitecs, I'd compare the ride to a audi on oe sports suspension. Wife complains a lil bit on speed bumps but the lil one who's only 8 weeks old doesn't flinch lol

Im looking into getting a set of spax coilovers. They are around £580. They have gas filled struts anf iv used there springs and damper combo before. Iv not purchased them yet so cant tell you how low you can go with 18's. Depends on the offset and widths of the wheels. If they poke out u may need arch work to go low.

I cant find any weitecs  for less than £600 has any one got a link for some any cheaper.

They're cheaper at motorsportworld & you'll not pay import tax on them either then

Yeah, for some reason your ebay link is coming up in USD so I thought it was being imported.

Theres a £1 difference between ebay and motorsportworld

http://www.motorsportworld.co.uk/

You'll find with some products that they will be advertised at virtually the same price, in a unofficial price fixing price fix the supplier will basically choose to not supply you as an outlet if you shag the prices online to keep the value of the product in the hope that the £ wars don't happen. As well as to stop people putting their product silly cheap if you aren't an outlet for that product as bait to get you on their website to offer a different product as the company can then stand by the fact that they aren't an official supplier if the product and I fact devaluing the brand and forcefully remove the product off the website... If that makes sense!

That being said, if you find a good motor factor or tuning centre that are willing to do a deal it's well worth a phone around to see if someone is prepared to do a deal. Don't be daft though as you won't get a £600 set of shocks for £300, no one makes that amount of margin! You may be able to get a tiny bit off, or something thrown in or half price labour etc. but always worth an ask.

I have had the spax coilies a few years back on a mk2 golf and rode real nice, I'm going that rout on my vrs next year.

My advice is buy the best you can afford had bad experience with cheap set ups.

If you can afford £500 save up and spend abit more. Worth it in the end

Looking at prices it seems the spax at £584 are the best option, has anybody got any experience with these ? I don't want a rock hard ride, I'm hoping to keep some of the vrs comfort. Oh and do I need the Vito drop links to fit these ?

I dont think anyone has them on. ppl are running either cheap stuff or the other end of the scale. Spax has adjustable damping and runs with gas so its going to be the best u will get on the softest setting for comfort. Id upgrade your top mounts while your at it 2.

I think davey doo may have spax ?

I've got weitecs on my car and they're very good for the money, they were under £500 new when I got them 3yrs ago!

Don't go too low though, they start getting a bit harsh the lower you go! ;-)

The AP coilover kit is always a popular option.

+1

so true.

Weitecs are so inferior to the KW's I have it is untrue. Although I am running low and the rebound is the main issue on low coilovers even with Weitecs.

The Spax RSX are a good option as they are both height adjustable and shock adjustable which the Weitecs and AP's are not.

I have heard good reviews on those and they look well built.

It is but the lower end quality over Wetecs and KW.

All built in same factory though.....

More delving needed on the spax, spoke with them direct today and they don't actually do a vrs rsx kit, it's non vrs only.

However, looking at spax part numbers for the psx and vex kits (as they have these listed individually) non vrs model uses the same part numbers front and rear to the mk4 golf 2wd.

The tt 2wd front same as tt 4wd, leon cupra r and mk4 golf 4 motion so same as vrs (as far as I'm aware, correct me if wrong?), and 2wd tt rear shocks same part number as spax listing on non vrs 1u octavia and mk4 golf.

As stated ride height and dampening adjustable.

I'm going to give them a shout back at technical as I only got clarification that they don't have a list for it with a very helpful lady over the phone, I'll check to see if they have experience with this kit on the vrs.

Yh id be interested to know. I thought they did vrs ones. Im new to vags so dont know what parts can be swapped and parts are the same as ect.

The odd thing is that the eBay link put up at the start of the thread states vrs but it's a part number that is non vrs, below is taken from the spax website:

Octavia (1U) (1U)-01/97-04--1.4,1.6,1.8,SDi; Tdi;1.8T; 2.0-2WD-Lowering:35-65 / 35-65mm- Height Adjustable Fr&Rr

[RSX853]. Not for struts with anti roll bar link attached to strut- At over 50mm lowering, modified anti roll bar LINK needed,

I'm hoping to get to the bottom of it as I can get spax through work on a staffie so fingers crossed!

So different drop links will be required then, if they will be ok for a vrs.

My only experience with coilovers is from my track car. Any coilovers which cost less than 1000 are not going to be good for much other than lowering your car. The ride and the quality will be poor.

I think you are better with a fixed height set up and youll be able to afford better quality. I've just ordered the koni sport - ok only 20mm drop, which will probably not be enough for you, from demon tweaks at just over 500.

Is your car about ride or look?

My advice = don't bother.

That is not quite true  imo.

I have had 3 different sets of coilovers on my car and a bunch of fixed struts and various springs.

A 500+ set is capable of delivering a comfortable ride. All coil overs are firm as that is their intention but not firm to the point they can not provide a decent ride .

Weitecs are the best value for a good ride and good quality for the every day user who is not going to go crazy low. Most "none adjustable"  coilovers have preset damping and that damping is best used within a range of lowering. You go beyond that and the rebound will not deal properly and then you get a crashy ride.

It is true that if you pay more like for something like KW's  their capability of damping is over a wider range so you can have a better ride at lower levels too. They are superior

Weitecs can handle a 30mm drop quite well for example. When i dropped my car lower(near 50mm) the Weitecs struggled.

However ask me what i would buy now i would say the dearer range just because they have a much better ability for my needs..which is fussy...

im not planning on going stupidly low just say arches at the top of tyres.

Arch to top or tyre is quite low on the VRS dude. That's probably over 30mm drop easy.

Weitec come with the correct drop links to go about 50mm? Im after mine being just above the tyre.

The Weitec kit is no longer available, KW discontinued this at the start of the year and replaced it with ST Suspension.
