octavia 1 coolant issue has me baffled even with UV light

Featured Replies

hi,

the car started loosing coolant a few weeks ago. whilst up on the ramps I gave it a good inspection and there were no leaks at all. I then pressure tested the cooling system - it was loosing pressure but very slowly (maybe 1 psi per 10 minutes). with the system under pressure there were still no leaks. I have flushed the coolant and dropped in some k-seal, still loosing coolant. it leaks at the end of a good run (10 mile trip to work). tried a new expansion tank and rad cap - still leaking. I placed some UV dye in the water and checked it with the UV torch - I can now see that it is coming from the expansion overflow which runs down the back of the bottle, under the washer bottle, over the intercooler and down to the ground.  just drove back tonight and the bottle is full of white foam - so I guess I am drawing in air somewhere and it is the foam/bubbles which are being pushed out of the bottle, settling into coolant and leaking?

where do I go from here?

oil is fine, exhaust smoke as per usual for a 1.9 tdi diesel

any suggestions would be most appreciated

cheers,

ian

Mine's been leaking for about 2 years now and I still can't find out why. It dumps coolant as soon as I park the car, even after short journeys.

If you find out what it is, make sure to post up!

CHG partial failure pressurising the cooling system?

CHG partial failure pressurising the cooling system?

Almost certainly a leaking CHG. Take it to a garage and ask them to do a 'block test' (tests for exhaust gases in the coolant).

ok - I'm gonna do a block test and change CHG if nec. any advice for which gasket to get?
