Diesel pump on its way out... is this common?

Featured Replies

I took the car for a service yesterday, only to be told the Diesel pump is leaking and the best cure for it is a new pump......

Is this a common fault on Octavia's with the engine code BKD ?

Are they referring to the tandem pump on the side of the engine?

Ps, just rang Skoda they can do the pump cheaper than GSF....

In that case yes it seems very common.

I had the same happen on my previous 1.9 Cordoba.

The pump has two gaskets on it. One that goes between it and the engine and one on the top cover.

The gasket that seals against the engine is available as a part and can be replaced. If it is leaking from there then ask if can be repaired rather than replaced.

If it's leaking from the cover (more common) then unfortunately this gasket cannot be replaced. It can be repaired but the Skoda garage won't do this.

I repaired mine with some gasket sealant. Took the cover off and cleaned all the diesel off and then put the sealant on.

Also worth checking is that your car wasn't part of a recall. There have been recalls on all VAG PD engines around that time:

"BOLTS OF THE TANDEM FUEL PUMP COVER MAY BREAK

It is advised that, on some vehicles fitted with a 3 and 4 cylinder pump injector engine, the bolts of the tandem fuel pump cover may break due to a bolt production fault. As a result, the pump housing will not be tight, and a diesel fuel leak may occur.

Recalled vehicles will have the pump checked for being of a certain manufacture. If found to be within the affected range, the pump housing cover bolts will be replaced."

Phil, thank you for that information.....

It only came to light when the professional independent Garage I use, serviced the car properly......

an example of the previous owners attitude was that the cabin filter was blacker than the interior.

They used Vag Com on it.....

Meanwhile your information has been most useful again thank you!

He's right mate. I replaced one on a friends Polo. His was weeping which eventually caused a coolant hose below to perish prematurely and burst, so double check it hasn't managed to get all over the hoses as it could cause other issues.

in an emergency (if it's not the o-ring type)   you can get away with a VITON (sheet) gasket but it will only last a few weeks  I think the heat& cool cycle kills it     Phil- what type of sealant did you use?

I think it needs further investigation, whilst the car is drinking Diesel I dont smell it or see puddles of it...... not like the time a diesel filter split on my dads truck jesus diesel sprayed out then!

I kind of hope its not the pump.....

Thank you for the heads up though guys!

I think it was this stuff I used:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_173106_langId_-1_categoryId_255217

It lasted for the few months we still owned the car go but can't comment on how long it would last. It is designed to withstand permanent contact with oil and with diesel being a heavy oil fuel I thought it would be ok.

Like I say it did stop the leak altogether for the few months before part-exing the car. We had a pretty bad leak too... engine and gearbox were covered in diesel. Had to degrease the whole area first.

I also replaced the other gasket while I was at it.
