POWER STEERING MYTH!

Featured Replies

Ive purchased a 2006 fabia 1.2 petrol it had suffered front near side accident damage which resulted in the original pump being missing.

i bought a second hand pump from a 2003 fabia it was partly working drives spot on but when it comes to parking it is very heavy.

pump 2 came this morning and nothing happened when i fitted it to the car.I phoned the shop where i bought it and he said the serial number must match.

Very hard when i dont know the original number.

I contacted a skoda dealer and he said all the pumps are the same its a plug and play

Does anyone know if these pumps are compatable???

or do the serial numbers have to match???

Also will the steering wheel symbol come off the dash when a working pump is installled???

The pump is coded to ecu with level of assistance required thus a 1.2 more assistance than a sporty vrs in the coding

Can my ecu be programmed to accept another pump then?

Possibly via VAG software ?

The steering pump is completely self-contained with it's own little on-board ECU which takes the input from the steering angle sensor and translates it into power assistance. No coding or reprogramming of the main ECU is required, the pump is connected to the vehicles CAN-bus which is how it communicates with the diagnostic socket, the vehicle speed sensor and the warning light. You need to reset the warning light using VCDS once you have replaced the pump, I believe you can alter the default power assistance settings in the pumps onboard ECU but someone else may be able to tell you how to do that.

This is from a post on SCN.

Open the steering assist module

click recode -07

take note of the value, on mine it was 000121

change it

mine is now 000151

its more work to steer but you get much more back from it. Steering is more positive and less twitchy. I may well knock it down to 141 to ease it up a bit.

Getting some where now : )

Would this do the job after I put my new pump on?

eBay item number 221305008083

other way around, the heavier diesel's and Vrs's have more assistance, the lighter petrols less assistance :)

Faboka changed mine for me as I felt the Vrs steering was too light, so set it to the least amount of assistance possible, much better feel imo ;)
