Can you not just look at the Standard Down Pipe on your own car?

Worth Getting. If your are Tuning.

Hi george,

I do not have the tools required to look at my downpipe on my car :(

im at a garage this weekend to get my resonator removed and possibly a sports cat, i wanted to get some things prepared so we can bounce some ideas around.

I would love the jetex but at that price im going to have to give it a miss, especially when the labour this guy charges is only £50ph and sports cats are around £90.

Are you after more power/speed or just noise?

Tuning is nice and all good and well, but a bit of a gamble with a CAVE engine,

it is a £4,000 plus gamble if you have Finance on the car.

A TMC Tuning box will give you more usable power at about the cheapest cost.

so using the original 2.25" pipework and adding a sports cat makes the most sense.

im planning for hopefully stage 2 apr, so thats, induction kit, FMIC, downpipe of some sort, then stage 2 remap.

im very tempted by the TMC box due to the fact they hold their value very well! due to the fact none are for sale! just the whole tuning box vs remap thing puts me off

so its a bit of everything im after. it seems like i have a REALLY healthy engine, its not used a single drop of oil yet, its silent, and drives so well its a beast, by far the best one i drove out of the lot!

Best just do things once then.

im going to have to weigh things up if im honest when it comes to remap.

i like the idea of a tuning box, due to the fact i can sell it and get my money back!

i like the idea of the remap because its the proper thing to do.

I need to look into the TMC box a bit more tbh.

I need to know what map this is!!

Have you timed your car? ( I suspect the one on the Vid would be faster in 'D'.)

It should be good for a

0-70 of under 9 seconds & a 0-80 of 11 seconds.

TMC or Stage 1 on 99 ron,

0-70 under 8 seconds & a 0-80 under 10 seconds.

Matthew, your thoughts on using existing pipework mirrors my own, you clearly have read some of the same posts now, I think 200 cell cat on stock downpipe is a decent shout, potentially Stage 1 software with this is the best and safest option.  I would like to try stage 2 though.  For more power, it would be worth a call to Turbo Dynamics, I have a specific Turbo spec that Lucifer is trialling atm.  If he gets results and runs his engine without issue, then and only then might it be worth talking Hybrid.  A stage 2 car will be very fast anyway.

I have to give another +1 to George's shout on the APR Stage1+2 maps, it's worth remembering that they don't charge for softare upgrade 1 -> 2

I would looooove the APR intercooler, but the price is an utter joke, so I may be asking a favour of a contact at Forge.

Ive not read any posts on keeping original pipework yet, im just tight and im not paying around £600 for something which can be made for less than half of that :) if you have them would you link me to what youve been reading?

I asked this the other day, would a sports cat require a remap? most cars i know dont require remaps after Sports cats are fitted, some which i've been into in the past (supras) need remaps if you do anything like that as it raises boost! whats your take on this? obviously i will be using a 90 degree lambada spacer so i dont get any warnings on the dashboard. VXR guys are very up with decat turbo back exhausts and most dont run remaps so im assuming this is ok..

I didnt think about swapping turbos, but in the future once me and my GF arent renting and i have money spare this would be something i would be interested in! so if you could pass those specs over i would appreciate that a lot! (if its not top secret obviously :) ) i reckon 225ishhp would be enough to keep me very happy for a while.

i think this car is a keeper, i have owned it a little over a month and its been the best thing ive owned, fast, small yet big, practical, its unreal.

i dont think i dare even look at APRs intercooler.

Im tempted to make one, like i said in another post, mk2 focus RS intercoolers struggle to sell for £5.00 so may be worth trying to knock something up out of that... plus im tight and like making things...

Is it not possible to use a universal intercooler? You can get front mount ones for around 50 on a certain auction site. Dont know if they are any good and how 'universal' they are. Although the one I saw LOOKS the same as the forge one...

could you PM me the forge look alike? very interested.

i have been looking at the small universal intercoolers for £54, you'll know the ones im on about, if the 200sx guys can use them on motors with 300-380hp im sure if we can make them fit they will work just as well...

I am curious if anyone on the forum now owns or know its the car that was tuned in the 'vRSy'  build thread,

& how it is now after having the engine rebuilt?

haha bet that was sold 'never raced, never rallied, unmodified'

When you buy a Used or Previously owned car,

it is always a good idea to 'Time it' & maybe get it on a Dyno before starting Tuning or splashing cash.

You never know what Map or Tuning it might have had in a previous life.

Sometimes you get a nice Surprise and it can save you spending if the car

is already performing better than standard..

Its an idea to find out what the likes of the XDS, & Steering or Brake Assist are set at.

If you have to make a Warranty Claim and you think you have cover,

you can get an less welcome Surprise if the Manufacturer have the ECU checked out.

ha i bet it is, that would be a very nice surprise, shame i can tell already my car is completely and utterly standard :(

oh well, blank canvas for me isnt it :)

got this going in at the weekend if the parts i need turn up.

i received my barbed nylon connectors for the breather hose yesterday, just waiting on a reducer and some jubilee clips..

then some final tweaks and come cutting and it should be done :) standard air feed will be going back in also. its tight though as the filter is huge

I might have a small concern over the temps our engine bay hits and having an open filter like that.

That said, this is an area few have experimented with so should be interesting to see how you get on.

mathewl.,

That should De-tune the car nicely,

about 40 *0C plus behind the Battery on a warm sunny day.

That said though George, if you look at the design of the standard filter routing and the front slam panel, it doesn't inspire confidence that it would breathe all that welll either.

I think as is being suggested you need to consider the impact of heat soak.

I had my oil temps close to 130 degrees on track on a mixed weather day at Castle Combe.  It was a trick not to burn myself opening the bonnet inbetween sessions.

I have measured the temps in the standard Air Box, the Inlet, and a variety of inlets.

The position of post #19 is as poor as it gets,  Cold Air Feed required and some shielding.

Have a fast run, stop in the heat, bonnet stays closed, a nice sunny day,

restart the car and it takes some nice hot air in for a bit, it has the sensors having a hairy for a short while

This is a very low tech tuning aid, but handy to measure under bonnet temps.

£3.15 expenditure or so.

youre right this is a new area, until somebody gives it a go, nobody knows and we will continue buying over priced enclosed systems....

i see no issues with this in my opinion, many cars run open filters, this is whats used in every car scene. If it were that bad, would drift cars (which get no airflow while sideways) run intakes like this, from a performance point of view, no.

end of the day ive put it in a high pressure area at the back of the engine bay, this should be fine.

This isnt NA tuning where heatsoak plays a huge role(10oc = 1hp), think about it, the air you suck in goes through a turbo and heated then through a supercharger then through a piddly intercooler, which is just a heatsink...

this so far hasnt cost me much, so if it doesnt work, no worries. i have confidence though.

They have given it a go.

Look through some past posts and threads.

The difference here is the 1390 cc and Dual Charging and the numerous Sensors.

180-185 PS minimum as Standard, and most producing over that.

*The ECU can shut down the Turbo very easily, misfires are pretty damaging under load,

there is a bit more to it than feeding more air and fuel and spark.*

The Base Engine Unit is the same 1.4 TSI that is 105- 160 PS.

Worth Trying Stage 1 and 210 BHP,

then more cooling ect,
