Traveling ideas?

Do ensure you call in to Nick & Julie's place (username SolwayBoy) in Dornoch www.thewatersiderooms.co.uk a lovely place in a great location.

When you're heading towards The Channel Tunnel, give me a shout. I know a really good hotel for a stop over ;)

That's not Dornoch as in Dornoch Firth North East Scotland it is Dornoch on the Solway Firth not far from Gretna. Bye the way Gretna is claimed as the romantic capitol of the UK but it isn't that pretty to put it politely.

Hi and thanks! Made a note about Glencoe but is Callanish the place on the Isle of Lewis?

Have a nice evening!

Yes. I wasn't suggesting Lewis because that would mean (to fit as best it can with your other ideas) a ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway, and another from Tarbet (Harris {look, there are about 6 places called Tarbet or Tarbert}) to Uig on Skye.

Hi George!

Thanks for all the ideas and offers, we might just come by, depends on time and possibilities ... The Falkirk Wheel is probably a must do, it was really my cup of tea ... Have never heard of it before ...

If you're taking bikes with you there is a very nice cyclepath that runs alongside the Clyde Canal just next to the Falkirk wheel.

Thanks, but all I have that's on two wheels are motorized ... --> here --> ... and too big to carry ... :-)

Enjoying this thread as I am heading to Fort William tomorrow morning : looking the like the expert/ native Aspman, any recommendations for nice dining/restaurants in and around the Fort William area?

Or anyone other suggestions as to where is nice to go with the girlfriend?

JRJG

Fort William is a ways from me I'm afraid, not somewhere I've been for a long time.

The Green Welly at Tyndrum isn't a bad place to stop for a snack on the way up. Popular with bikers.

Perth, Dundee, Angus and up the East I know best.

Hi guys, just a short update ...

Today we spent most of the day at Highland Park Distillery at Kirkwall, Orkney Island. This is almost as holy ground to me, took the longest connoisseur tour and spent a small fortune at their shop ... ;-)

We are actually traveling mostly ad-hoc against some advise previously and so far it is working out for us, we also plan things as we drive by and in Scottland there are just so or too many things to do in this short time. Everywhere you look there is something interesting ...

This night is spent at the Point of Ness camp site just outside Stromness at the mainland of Orkney, it is very windy but so far the tent is standing ...

Have a nice night!

If you want pastoral - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/317205-norfolk-holiday/ may give you some ideas.

As you may not yet be whiskied out, near the Snetterton Race circuit is the only English whisky distillery

http://www.englishwhisky.co.uk/

Although gin may have been around longer in England, this is a spirit which is flavoured by the container in which it is matured - as in a whisky, rather than residual flavour of the ingredients or added "botanicals".

Most of the countries in Europe I have visited have a form of distilled spirits, from aquavit to vodka (perhaps there's even wxyz ones too).

Far enough - thanks for the information anyway, might use it the next time we visit.

Can honestly say it was absolutely amazing. Such spectacular scenery and the roads were fantastic . Driving along well surfaced, sweeping bendy roads that kept opening up to show a loch or a mountain range was unbelievable. The weather was great for us too . And the lack of traffic!? One particular day I drove for at least twenty minutes or so without seeing a car in either direction. When I did finally come across a big campervan it pulled over on a straight to allow me to pass. Sublime

I envy all of you living up there. Apart from the weather and midges of course. ;)

JRJG

No midges on the East coast ;-)

glad you had a nice trip

Take her on the Harry Potter Steam train that leaves from the main station at 10am if that's

her bag.  My wife loves any sort of scifi or fantasy thing so she loved it (in all honesty she took me

along as I'm not quite as into the potter stuff that she is, but it was still a great experience)

It's about 2 hours each way but takes in some stunning scenery and crosses the huge viaduct seen

in one or other of the movies. (The flying Anglia one???)  Usually you need to book up but if you get there

at about 8am you can buy tickets on the day. It's not cheap, but you do get a fair bang for buck IMO.

We stopped for fish and chips in Mallaig which was delicious. Then sat there having a pint listening

to a young kid playing the fiddle in the street.

Oh and try and get a clear run along the 'coastal' style road that runs toward Glencoe along the

edge of the Loch. It's a 60 road and a great run if you get a clear stab at it. Triffic driving road. B)

Oh sod it you're back again. That will teach me to read to the end before posting....

I've no interest in Harry Potter but I'd like a trip on that train :)

WHat's keeping you? There have been daily diesels on that line since the 1960s, and Summer steam services since the 1980s.

I'm off next week and might well do just that.
