Handsfree wiring query

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I've resently upgraded from 2006 1.9TDI Ambient to 2011 1.6TDI Elegance and I now have a fancy Bolero head unit.

When I press the phone button on the head unit it just mutes the audio, I've since discovered that there is no bluetooth module under the driver seat.

I'm thinking of getting a 2nd hand module from eBay or similar but I'm wondering is that all I'll need to complete the handsfree setup.

There is a MFSW with a phone button but that currently does nothing when pressed.

I'm wondering will I also need to wire in a microphone or would that already be present and just needs the bluetooth module to complete the setup?

Also what would be the perferred bluetooth module to get or does it matter much? If it matters I will be pairing a Google Nexus 5 to it.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Jimmy.

You'll need a wiring loom to go between the Bolero and the existing wiring. This also runs down to beneath the driver's seat (via the lower A-pillar where the bonnet release lever is).

There is also a microphone to source and run from the loom up the A-pillar to the light above the rear view mirror.

That's the easy bit...

Choosing a BT module depends upon your phone (rSAP or HFP), whether you have Maxidot display, which head unit you have and whether you want the facilities of a premium module or not.

I suggest that you look at car systems.eu for information on kits they sell and keep an eye on eBay at the same time.

Thanks for your reply KBPhoto.

I forgot to mention there is a connector block under the driver seat that I presume will connect to the bluetooth module.

Regarding Maxidot display, I think I have this but I'm not 100% sure. I have a display between the speedo and rev counter that I can fully navigate using the buttons and wheel on the MFSW.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Regards,

Jimmy.

That does look like you are in luck.

I'd prise out the light fitting above the internal mirror and see if you have a microphone as well.

If you do, all you need is a BT module and some VCDS coding.

Do you get a picture on the dash display showing which door is open? That's Maxidot.

Do you know if your phone is rSAP or HFP?

Do you want text messages appearing on the headunit and being stored in the car as opposed to the phone (I believe those are the major differences)?

I hope those shots confirm maxidot display.

I think my phone is HFP

That's Maxidot and that's a microphone (black thing on the right).

So try Bluetooth Module 7P6035730J.

This is one of the latest modules, but works with pretty much all phones and is not a premium module.

Check out CarSystems.pl for further info.

look on ebay for the modules

Thanks for the help KBPhoto and thanks for the tip on eBay Eddie-NL.

KBPhoto, you mentioned VCDS coding earlier. What does this involve? Is it something I can do myself or do I have to go to the main dealer?

Have a look at the VCDS owners map in the 'In car entertainment' section on this forum if you don't have it.

Someone near you will do it for beer usually.

Just checked the map and no one within 200km

I’m living in Limerick, Ireland.

:(

You may be lucky and it will work straight away.

When I fitted mine it did actually work without the coding.

If not it wouldn't cost too much to get a delear to quickly do the coding.

You have been lucky to already have the microphone and wiring in place as that has saved a lot of hassle.

Yeah, I guess the previous owner might have removed the bluetooth module to install in their new vehicle and left the wiring.

Here's hoping that is the case then :)

As Phil said, it may work without coding.

It often does, but you don't get full functionality the way you want it unless you do.

I have a couple of bluetooth modules for sale

The bluetooth module arrived today and I popped home from work during lunch to quickly test its functionality.

The good news.

It worked fine from what I could see, I was able to pair it to my phone and the address book downloaded to the unit and I was able to place and receive calls using the head unit and MFSW.

The bad news.

I got a bit of a surprise when I turned the ignition after installing it, 8 warnings regarding the bulbs on the right side of the car were not functioning (front fog to rear number plate). I tried them and they were indeed not working.

I removed the module and they all worked and no warnings.

Have I received a dodgy bluetooth module or is this where the VCDS coding is needed?

I'm going to do some more research when I get home, maybe I made a balls of connecting it up but I don't see how that could happen as the connector looks fairly idiot proof.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's weird and I can't see how they are related. Its not going to be coding related.

I would try once more to see if it repeats. It maybe just an attack of gremlins possibly related to a weak battery? which has been exposed to heavier load by the pairing process.

Can bus gateway issue? I retrofit mine and always get a can bus error microphone malfunction no matter what I do but everything works spot on with my columbus . a vdcs scan might help.

I wondered if the lights are on the same part of the canbus network as the BT which might possibly create a link if there is a short?? but in your case Gathy there is a much more plausible link to the microphone in the coding.

If it keeps happening a vcds scan would be best.

Could explain why the box was missing in the first place.

What unit did you buy? I'd be happy to swap with my original rsap box that came with my car ;)

I brought the car into the garage and they gave it a once over and identified a faulty connection in the wiring loom that feeds the right hand side lights.

They said they are separated into two to avoid having no lights in the event that one comes loose or has a problem.

Everything is working fine now so I'll graciously decline that swap JRW ;)

Thanks to everyone for their help with this.

Regards,

Jimmy.

Pleased to hear you got it sorted and it was an easy fix.
