I know it was in my mk2 and I'm pretty sure it was in the mk1's I had too so, what does the button on the inside of the driver's side B pillar do ?

...or you can double press the lock button on the remote with the same effect.

Not quite, double pressing the remote deactivated the deadlocks (safe function) as well. If you are leaving people in the car press the remote twice. If you are leaving the windows down an inch but want the doors to be deadlocked then press the button on the a pillar and then lock the car as normal with one press of the remote. This will disable the interior monitoring and the trailer anti theft if you have a towbar fitted.
