Fabia VRS power steering has a mind of its own..?

Featured Replies

Picked up the new fabia vrs yesterday, 04 plate, 100k fsh, few extras.. sun roof, leather door cards and all that but my main concern is the power steering, it has a complete mind of its own. as u turn a corner it works fine but half way through the power steering cuts out, sometimes does it throughout a turn sometimes wont do it at all?..

whats the problem? :wonder:

What RPM are you at whilst turning? Is it a tight turn too? As the power steering pump runs off the battery when the RPMs are lower than 1400, and if your battery if fubar'd it cannot supply the power steering pump with the required power, thus cutting the assistance out

yeah that's what I was thinking and im not sure on RPM nd it happens on every corner.. tight or wide, but I has had a new battery ive got a recipt for that but ive not actually had a look at the battery so mat be a smaller battery or the terminal could not be on correctly.. that or the alternators had it..

Or it could be the steering angle sensor. You can check the battery and alternator with a voltmeter, but you'll need VCDS to check the sensor.

yeah I was told it was angle sensor to but nothing like that seemed to come up on my diagnostic scanner

I don't know the code number, but VCDS is likely to say "Steering angle sensor: Implausible value". Other readers may vary, assuming they can do the entire car and not just the engine.

jack it up and run the engine going from lock to lock with the reservoir cap off, your having the same issue i had - turned out it was a bubble or 10 in the pipelines which would cause it to be fine then dead then spring back to life and repeat !

Good tip, and worth trying because it's more or less free and at worst can't do any damage.

yeah I did think of it, will give it a try later on..? does the car need to be jacked up and does the air bag light being on hint out any other possible causes..

It changes the angle of the reservoir slightly. More to the point, taking the weight off the front tyres will let you turn the steering much faster.

gave it a little run and didn't work turns out my power steering pumps nack

Sounds the same symptoms I had and turns out the pump was knackered.

Just replaced mine and it's lights as a feather again, genuine TRW pump can be found on eBay for £200 fraction of the £600+ Skoda charge for exactly the same thing !
