Washer System has died!

Featured Replies

The washer system has apparently died on my 2003 Octavia TDI. The pump doesn't seem to be working at all.

Short of replacing the washer pump does anyone have any advice on fault finding?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked the fuse?

Replace the pump there like a £5 off eBay.

Yes ive checked the fuse.

are they prone to just stopping working completely?

Have you checked the stalk is working?

I would start by sticking a multimeter across the pump connections and confirming you get 12v when the stalk operated.

Easy job to replace one, I did mine recently. Was a faf getting the washer bottle out but not a challenging job by any stretch! Yeah check stalk first, also if you have headlight washers, turn your headlights on and see what happens when you pull the washer on. If it works then the stalk should be fine.

Headlight washers are working fine so I guess it is the pump.

Thanks for the help.

If the headlight ones work surely the pump is working? Maybe you have a blockage or a leak? When u pull the stick does a puddle appear on the floor?

As P34RC3 states the headlight washers share the same pump so it looks like one of the pipes is leaking, blocked or has come off.

I thought that there was a shared pump too, but didn't check.  Pretty much the only joints for the front jets are under the scuttle panel, so if the car is parked on the level, I would expect water to dribble out of the rear of the front offside wheel arch (assuming there isn't a compost factory behind the wheel arch liners...
