Door handle not fitting properly after replacing lock mech

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I have battered my fingers trying to sort out my central locking problem, and success, that now works.

However, my door handle now doesn't sit flush with the door. It sits proud as in the first photo. When I use it, it sticks open, as in the second.

Please tell me it's an easy fix and not something expensive and awful.

I think your Bowden cable's not in the right notch mate.

It lined up with the mark I made... presuming that is the little bit that sits in the threaded groove?

When I put it back together... the handle didn't see free even before I reconnected the cable to it.

hi i have the same problem with the handle not sitting right with mine.

i had to yank the handle to get it open but since i the handle is not sitting right it opens nice and easy now.

i have had a word with Skoda and they said it could be the cable or the handle bracket.

but it could only be one or more of three things the lock, the cable or the bracket if i fix mine before you i will tell you what it is

When you undone the grub screw to remove the lock barrel, did you hold the handle out?

If not, try it again. I'm pretty sure if you hold it out, under the screw, the handle will stay out a little to enable the barrel to come out easily.

That's the little one... the top of the two holes in the side of the door?

I didn't hold the handle out when I undid it, the guide I read didn't mention that at all.

If you undo a little bit the upper screw, does the handle come back in the right position?

Hello. Today I have the same problem and even without the cable fitted the exterior handle won't sit right. The part that passes through the opening at the cable end and acts as a stop to restrict how far it can be pulled out. It clashes with 2 similar protrusions on the handle bracket inside the door body. I am going to remove the nearside door card to see if I can resolve the issue. With everything connected it works okay but the handle doesn't sit flush up to the door because of the interference from the handle bracket. Altering the position of the cable via the serrated plastic nipple on the cable doesn't make any difference at all, as it's the part of the handle bracket that is preventing the door handle from fully retracting towards the door. Could the handle bracket be distorted (maybe when I removed the handle)? It's very hard to see either from inside or outside what is happenening in there.

It is hard to sort, I haven't managed to sort it out just yet. Need to get the door apart again.

Gosh, after replacing my lock I have suffered the exact same symptoms.

Anyone with an idea?

I'm still not 100% sure on the correlation between the two T20 screws holding the lock house. The upper one is just simply holding the lock barrel (I managed to unscrew so it fell into the door), but the lower one I'm not so sure about.

In some other thread they say it rotates some sort of cage which is supposed to be in line with the lock barrel for it's removal. Strange, this mechanism is not visible from just looking.

Anyone with an idea about what I could have done wrong to get this issue with the handle?

It's the cable from lock to door handle. You can adjust where the plastic nipple sits. DO NOT over adjust i.e. move the seated position to far out . What I mean by this is that your handle will then sit flush but the door won't open because the cable won't return far enough back to the mechanism. This dead locks the door. If anyone has done this then a sway of your hips against the outside of the door around the handle, closing the door further may release it.
