Engine swap Fabia I

Featured Replies

Hi guys, got a 1.4 16v and I have strong reason to believe the piston rings are on their way out so I was just gonna chuck a new engine in there

Was going to source out another 1.4 but was wondering if maybe a golf IV 1.6 block would go in and what implications it would have like changing gearbox etc

Only reason for asking is my missus has the 1.6 golf and it pulls far better than my little fabia

Cheers

Cough seat iveza fr 1.8turbo ;)

Care to share that strong reason for belief in the demise of your piston rings?

Well it failed a compression test as two cylinders were down an the two spark plug were covered in oil but thought it was valve seals but it's breathing really heavy and seriously underpowered and is sound limpier on idle everyday so my suspicions are piston rings wear

Fairy nuff, rings it is.

There's two options

1) - Swap like for like, probably an easy/cheaper task especially if you have skills to do it (which I suspect you have going on talk in other thread)

2) - Go balls deep and convert to something a bit bonkers.  More money, more blood/sweat/tears, but perhaps more rewarding come the end, if it comes. ;)

I think Richard still has an Ibiza donor car could be worth a shout (BossFox)

The 1.6 is a cast Iron block versus the 1.4 alloy block, they are completely different engines. If your 1.4 were healthy it would pull just as well as your missus Golf since the Golf is heavier. Just buy a healthy 1.4 and straight swap it.

by chance were the two cylinders down on compression next to each other?

Ive seen a Head Gasket fail between cylinders and to oil galleries.

Regarding the engine change, Im not sure about the width of the Golfs track/width. Id suggest looking for something from the Polo/Ibiza/Fabia as they are all designed for the same track widths. Meaning you shouldnt need to mess around with custom driveshafts etc and should share common engine mount locations etc.

Also what you need to consider is the Engine ECU and electrics, if you swap the ECU you will then need things such as the immobilizer in the dash cluster to be reprogrammed.

So as Jason said, either alot of money doing a serious conversion (1.8T route) or just swap another 1.4 engine in. That way you can keep the same gearbox and bits.

furthermore as Sepulchave said a good running 1.4 16V is on par with the 1.6 8V engine in the Golf.

Just buy a healthy 1.4 and straight swap it.

Funny that, just what I have lurking under here. :D

Thanks for all the help guys, sadly though only having had my licence for 9 months, a turbo is way out of the question, insurance would have a field day! Lol

1.4 100hp lump is it then! And we'll sort out the viewing sometime soon if that's cool Jason

Jason if that engine had a misfire on Cylinder 4, have you done a compression test?

Just to make sure it isnt the Piston Rings, im sure Barnsey420 doesnt want any Deja Vu :P

Normally I would have thought that but Car ran perfectly in terms of temps, coolant clean, economy normal and still was taken on long journeys with the misfire. I would also like to think piston rings would actually not bring up a fault code whereas this did as car was sensing the electrical issue with cylinder 4. :) it probably wouldn't take much to get engine running as still have battery and could just rebolt exhaust manifold back on.
