Car ramps

Featured Replies

Hi,

What car ramps do you  use on the octavia vrs,  I used my usual ramps,  and the bloody front bumper scraped the driver side. Never done that before but obviously the octavia is a bit lower,  the car is standard.  I actually ended up using one ramp and the wheel turned to the right and it sort of worked. I guess iI need longer ramps?

Nope mate you can get ramp extensions! Try eBay or Machine Mart! They help for lower cars!

Hmm Ok,  mine are solid, (the bit where you drive)  so not sure the extension would work,  but I'll look into it.  Or buy some other ones

I can only reverse onto my ramps, my car is lowered 35mm only so is probably a tad lower than a standard VRS at the moment. I generally don't bother these days as I have a good jack and stands. Would be nice for oil change though.

and extensions cost more than the ramps!

I've made some extensions out of excess decking, just layered them stagered and screwed together so they slot into the haps on my ramps. No help if yours are solid though, but may help others with open ramps.

I bought the ramps pictured below, they are quite long, wide and can be raised higher once the car is on them, as the Golf is low at the front I also cut up my old ramps and use them as extensions that I hang about three bars up these ramps so a longer approach is achieved.

Oooooooofff ramp porn! I like the idea of the hydraulic lifters to raise it too, how much were they?

They were about £120 delivered, they came from Germany within 5 days of ordering and I only have one criticism of them. The bottle jacks are not fixed to the base, so every time I use them I have 6 things to carry to the car, ramps x2, bottle jacks x 2 and jack handles x 2 although one does fit both.

The added bonus for me was that the supplier rejected the paypal payment, they then asked for payment again and I emailed my first paypal statement showing payment made and to cut a long story short, I paid nothing for them    A result in my book.

Here they are on eBay

They're awesome!!

I have the heavy duty version of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hydraulic-Car-Ramps-Hydraulic-Car-Lifts-Adjustable-Car-Ramps-Brand-New-/151207816628 . Ignore the price - sellers ramp up the price (see what I did there) when they get to the last one, to avoid listing fees.

The other advantage with hydraulic ramps is that you can lower the car onto or raise the car off axle stands - one side or both. Raising the wheels 16" gives you about 21" at the sump - much more comfortable to work under.

I you are not fat I would recommend these, because are safer

How do you mean safer?    The jack up ramps above use the jacks to lift, next to the jack are two tubes with holes through so as a pin can be past through and lock them in that position, jack can be removed and the car stays elevated.

safer because the plastic ones have 100%foot print there are slim chances to run them over with the car and damage the car ,can be used on other road surfaces less stable, and can be used for very low cars

Well IMO the ones with jacks are safer and tbh if you are creeping up the ramps (in quite a low car normally) you should be able to feel the ramp stops as you would have to put your foot down further!

the point is:rising your car so high unnecessary is dangeuros and useless.

If you are are DIYer mechanic try to remain safe and rise your car as safe as you can just enogh to have room to work, higher you get is more unstable ... dooo'h  :x

That is what I do with mine.  I quite often just use a couple of spare scaffolding planks.

...higher you get is more unstable...

Stability isn't a function of height. All four wheels are level and there is no tendency to roll at all. The ramps can raise 1500kg each and can support twice that.

It is so much easier to do jobs such as replacing a radiator.

It's so much safer replacing a gearbox, when you have enough clearance to get a floor jack in.

I usually use my ramps under the front wheels, once up on the ramp I then jack the rear of the car up under the middle of the rear subframe as high as the jack will go and place axle stands under the rear end, then I go back to the front and jack up the ramps to full height and insert pins.

It is nearly high enough to sit up under there!   I have had the exhaust off and also done many fluid changes like this, engine, gearbox, rear diff and Haldex.  To lower the car the front ramps drop down, the rear axle stands are removed and then jack lowered, simply back off the ramps, all is really stable and sturdy.

I have some scaffolding planks,  I may try to adapt them slightly....

Cheers for all the replies

Dan

I build a stack of scaffold board to use as ramps can only insert 2 at a time to clear bumper as lowered about 50mm with lcr splitter.
