niceyellow vrs has lived with both the 2.2TDCI Mondeo (his father used to have one) and Fabia Vrs. niceyellow vrs, given the choice would choose the Mondeo over the Fabia as it is faster, handles bett

  • I think you should try a Westfield,   pulls rather well when overtaking.

Chalk and cheese. Do you want a big family car or a small hatchback?

Want a hatchback more but i like the ford too.

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like a Ford Focus Diesel answers your requirement.

1.8 or 2.0 TDCi

The Mondeo. It's the superior car a long way.

Ignore this. NiceyellowVrs hates fabia vrs's. Not a balanced view at all.

Where exactly did THAT come from?   :dull:

The Fords do tend to have problems with injectors.

....and rather expensive fuel pumps iirc?

Lol. not really. Because you hate Fabia Vrs's. :P

A diesel family saloon being compared to a hot hatch?

Id be thinking about what i want from the car.

The fabia is more easily compared to a fiesta, and the mondeo is more like an octavia or superb.

Got a little family/ just yourself??

Family = FORD

You = Fabia VRS

Much more room in back of FORD compared to Fabia..

Thanks to all for the opinions and i want to know one more thing the Skoda pulls well? in speed ... i know maybe this sounds a littler "ricer" but i can't afford a petrol car yet.

If you want to know which one feels like it has more grunt overtaking then the best way is to surely testdrive both and decide?

As others have said they are completely different cars really.

What vintage of each are you looking at? Clearly it's going to be at least 7 years old for the Skoda but are you looking at a Mk 3 or Mk 4 Mondeo?

I have a Mk 4 Mondeo and a Mk 2 Fabia vRS; the Mondeo is much more refined, smoother and almost as fast as the vRS (I have a 200bhp Ecoboost Mondeo!). We have 3 children so the Mondeo is used for family duties whilst the Fabia is Mrs T's daily commuter and my weekend 'fun' car. The Mondeo handles much better (although the recent addition of a RARB to the Fabia has closed the gap somewhat) but if you want any fun in the Mondeo you need to be travelling quite quickly.

If you were going for a mondeo st tdci or Octavia vrs crdi I'd chose the Octavia.

Fabia vrs is a great choice but perhaps you are choosing between the wrong cars.

Perhaps?

Understatement.

Totally unbalanced comparison to consider.

Smart car or a Superb please?

Which is best?

Yeah, ideally need to know which age Mondeo your looking at.

I car share with a person with a Mondeo. Much nicer place to be in than my Fabia was, and that's a 2001 plate (the mark 2?) I assume the newer ones don't get worse.

Based on that, the Ford, but I've never driven one.

I had a focus 1.8 TDCI when the insurance was too expensive on a Fabia. I didn't like it although it was a nice looking car. The only thing I wanted that it didn't have was a heated windscreen.

The Fabia is quite "close quarters" if you have any passengers and are of a more than average build (my experience anyway)

The mondeo has bags of space in every direction.  I had a 1.8 TDCi, figuring it's mass market motoring and well proven engine would be more reliable than the 2.0TDCi and better on fuel than the 2.2....

Engine was fine until the DMF started to crumble into the starter motor. Cost of repair £1300+.  On a car that was booking at a shade under £3k, wasn't realistically worth it.

Moral of story - do your research.  read owner forums for months, not days, before purchase.  yes, people complain more with a duff car, but the more complaints and issues you read about, you can get a better feel for what you're getting into.

Odd cars to compare, I currently have the 2.2 TDCI Mondeo ST, really nice car to drive and averages 42-45 MPG, I had the Octavia TFSI VRS before hand again a lovely car just costing me more then I was happy to spend as well as being on finance and by getting rid of that I now own the Mondeo.

Both cars are comfortable, Octavia probs more reliable going on problems you can have with the mondeo, but you will always hear the problems when you look on forums, Mondeo has more toys then the Octavia, (do miss the dual zone climate control though) The Mondeo I bought had the Injectors replaced and a FSH

Again I can't compare the Mondeo to a Fabia, closest I can do is SWMBOS 2002 Micra compared to the Micra, Mondeo=big motorway muncher, Micra=Hilarious little go kart!

Drop me a pm if you want to know anything regarding the Mondeo though,

A friend of mine bought a '59 plate Mondeo 2.2 TDCI Titanium-X.

Lovely car filled with gadgets (loved the massive screen in the instrument cluster).

She had many problems with it. Within a week of buying the engine light came on. I scanned it and it was the EGR.

Garage cleaned it out and it was ok for a little while. They then finally replaced the EGR.

Then had further problems with injectors and fuel pump and finally got rid.

Have you considered an Octavia 1.9 PD105 or 2.0 PD140?

Phil
