Standard suspension - the verdict

Featured Replies

Seen apex springs for £80 new are they any good on these? Don't really want to pay £180 for eibach springs or £200+ for ap shocks and springs

I've only heard good things about Apex shocks (for the money).  I only bought the Eibach's because someone on here was selling a set AND i've had them on all my other cars so knew what to expect.  If they hadn't of come up when they did i would have 100% bought the Apex springs.

  • Avoiding too much lowness and putting decent kit on actually makes them handle reasonably well and be comfortable to drive.   Shocker!

  • Yup! Here was mine between lowering systems... There was a family of Bosnians sheltering under the arches when I got back to the car.

  • Pssssss your shooting your for sales add in the foot lol

I keep getting mixed reviews of apex springs which is why I'm a bit hesitant to get them. Some rate them whereas others say they're as bad as joms :/

I've had Eibach springs on mine for the last 3-4 years, can't fault them.

Buy cheap, buy twice, or even three times if the Apex are no good, which I suspect for the price they won't be.

I have recently got a set of pi springs for my octy £100 and there great. There pritty.much as standard comfort wise, i would say a little smoother but handles great. I wouldnt always rule out cheaper products dont always go for the expensive ones just because of what people say. In the majority of cases those who dis the cheaper ones have never tried them.

Standard suspension is more than adequate for myself. - previously I drove a Y reg 206 that originally had 17" low profiles when I bought it. So dodging pot holes and rough spots is a habit. Quite surprised at how hard the fabia's ride is, I assume it is due to it being a sporty model and therefore harder for improved cornering?

The ride height doesn't bother me and I still don't understand why people thinking putting a car on it's arse is a good idea for looks or performance. It isn't a F1 car ... Or is it.

there's a happy medium between on stilts and on it's arse. the standard ride height is laughable for the sportiest version

Exactly. It doesn't need slammed on its arse, just brought down to reduce the altitude sickness a bit! Going round a roundabout or corner feels horrific at anything over 10mph. No idea why they made it so high. Just look at most other standard road cars out there, even they don't have such a comical arch gap

My personal taste for all cars is for the arch to sit just above the top of the tyre which is how my coilovers are set. If I could get some springs which made it sit like that I'd be well happy :) think it's gunna sit abit higher than that on springs though

Are your coilies for sale :)

Why do people buy these cheap coilovers... apart from the obvious?! Cheap economy and you get what you pay for.

That said, I know I don't have the "best" coilovers, but I do find them good, but at this height. When I first put KW's on, they were second hand and were seized at pretty much their lowest setting on the front, adjusters removed from the rear, and the ride was really uncomfortable. I replaced it with a brand new like-for-like and raised her an inch maybe and all is well. So maybe it has something to do with the height too?

Pics of cars on AP springs & shocks combo look good!

I've put my coilies up for sale as spares / repairs just in case anyone wanted them. Failing that, they're literally going in the skip!!!

I bought them second hand off here as a short-term stop gap to getting my car lowered. I now realise what a complete mistake it was to buy them even as a stop gap!!

I definitely think ride height has a hell of a lot to do with the comfort factor, even with decent coilies. I must admit though, it looks bloody horrid after seeing it looking very sexy on black Spiders for over a year!!

This thread was meant as a bit of a warning to people ha ha!

I had eibach springs on my old vrs and they were great. Just as comfortable as standard but 35mm lower :)

Ive got b8s and h&r springs on my ibiza fr, soooooooooooooo much better than the standard stuff.

The shocks make the biggest difference

Bilsteins are excellent shocks, but should be too as they are near the top of the price range for standard style shocks!

Went in Lofty's VRS fitted with these and Eibachs, felt very nice but not harsh.

Was only a slow drive though,as Matt is knocking on a bit his reactions are lacking now..........

Can vouch for the B8/Eibach combo, just done 1400 mile in 4 days round Europe including lapping the ring at considerable pace and the compliance and suppleness this set up gives you is spot on.

Cars been fully laden as well, with no bottoming out or any daftness. Even stable when flat knacker on the de-restricted Autobahn..

H+R springs aren't bad also (are they progressive?I think so).

Possibly a bit firmer hence less comfy than the Eibach due to 1cm less ride height so I believe....but they also are a nice compromise between "low" and "downright uncomfortable".

I don't really understand that "slammed" look on an everyday road car. For a shower, fine, but otherwise you reap what you sow !

I wonder what Eibachs would be like but to be honest after ironing the glitches out with the suspension (and tyres) combination I'm happy

Whoever thinks you don't benefit "on the road" of decent suspension, sorry but you don't drive properly. Even at legal speeds there are some nice curves out there where the car digs in much nicer with a nice compromise of ride height.

If it wasn't a vRS then it would be fine but for what is supposed to be a sportier model, I'm sorry the ride height as standard just doesn't cut it

What bonesetter didn't say was how well the Eibachs would have performed if he'd just uprated the shocks because he didn't try it, I have the Eibach/Bilstein combo and it's pretty good, no crashing at all, it's only a 25mm drop though so that might be relevant.

Have a look at Bonesetter's topic about going spring/shocks and non-Eibach.

That topic is a good read, but the springs that Bonesetter used aren't available from KW anymore as they only sell springs through ST now by the looks of it.

KW Part number 25082018, doesn't exist with ST, but there is a similar part number 28282018 which offers the same 20mm drop as the KW:

I've always gone for Eibach springs with a 'sensible' drop of no more than 30mm and replaced most of the bushes to reduce the play on my past cars. Will probably do the same on the Fabia eventually once I've sorted a few little bits out.

Unless you plan to track your car anything else is overkill in my eyes. Good tyres are also very important! Pointless putting money into improving handling and then running mediocre tyres all round lol.

Theres more to the cars suspension setup than ride height and the ride height isn't its main issue.

The rear end doesnt work well with the front, and can create a see saw effect in some corners. The Rear ARB isolates this but its a crude fix.

The best improvement is the geometry.. When the rear wheels are pointing inwards the car is always going to feel like it wants to understeer as its setup that way for safety.

Fit a kit to make it 0 toe (rear wheels pointing straight) and the front end turn is improved. You still have a boat anchor front end feel but the car actually wants to go around a corner and tighten the line with lift off if required, nothing as good as what a french car will do though. But an improvement non the less from standard.

Cheap coilovers are always a false economy.

Let's not forget wheel frequencies, damping ratios, low speed damping, high speed damping, roll angles, dive angles, bump steer, roll angles to name a few :)

Looks like roll angles are DOUBLY important!

"Performance" companies never seem to list spring rates, most you get is x% increase over standard which does. Not good if you find you want to alter the balance.

Looks like roll angles are DOUBLY important!

lol double trouble.
