This main beam of mine.

Featured Replies

It seems different from anything else I've ever driven.

Sort of a 'halo' effect, or am I just imagining it?

Is your Greenline an Elegance, i.e. does it have the bi-xenon's?

The standard halogen 'flash' bulbs illuminate on main beam too and this very yellow light output is in stark contrast with the xenon high-beam which can create a unique effect on very dark tree lined roads.

Yes and yes.

Weird spooky effect.

Also, am I right in saying that the fog lights appear to be coming on whilst reversing at night time?

Keep discovering little oddities with this car.

Fogs coming on when reversing is a setting with VCDS, can be turned off. Idea is, when reversing they light up the area in front of the car, helping you to avoid that low kerb or rock when you move forward again.

Oh. Didn't realise this. Only noticed it last week too.

The main beam (bi-xenon) will give a very defined  'arc' effect at the very top of the beam i.e. around the tops of trees. As Silver1011 mentions the xenons are assisted by the halogen bulb when on main beam.  When the adaptive headlights (i.e. the swivel effect) are engaged this really emphasises the presence of the halogen bulb.   Personally I hate the mix of xenon and halogen, I think it looks odd and distorted.  Same goes for the fog lights with the halogen bulbs in contrast with the xenons.

Mine hasn't got the 'adaptive' bit unfortunately.

Had that on my vRS and thought is was fantastic.

Are you sure, you have an elegance right? So you have bi-xenons without adaptive, didn't think that existed but maybe I'm wrong?? When you have the 'auto' setting on your headlights switched on at night you should get the bending/ adaptive lights.

Defo and elegance , yes, and defo  got xenons that do a little adjustment dance when I turn them on....just like the vRS used to do, but I never had them switched onto auto as I don't use that facilty and still don't.

P'raps they've changed the settings since 2010?

So, are you saying that the adaptive mode only works IF the lighting is set to auto?

I'm almost excited in anticipation of nightfall now so I can try this out!  :D

Well if they do the 'adjustment' when you switch on the ignition that's the adaptive system doing its self test.  You should definitely have them alright.  I had them on my 2011 and the system hasn't changed since.  Adaptive will only work when on auto though.  I actually have mine on dipped during the day and then switch to auto at night to have the benefit of adaptive lights.  You also get the benefit of coming home / leaving home lights (i.e. the lights come when you open the car and stay on for a short period after you lock the doors) when you have the 'auto' function engaged.

Try it later on this evening and you'll discover yet another new feature  .  Let us know how you get on but I can't see why it shouldn't work

Well they've obviously changed since 2010 build as i say, either that or something was adjusted on my vRS via VCDS...or vagcom as I still call it.

Thanks though, as I was actually a little bit disappointed when I THOUGHT mine hadn't got the adaptive facilty.

This new  car of mine just keeps on suprising me.  :D

Both my Superbs have adaptive lights, 09 Elegance and 14 L&K. Thought all cars with bi xenons have this facility.

It'll be me. Numpty head. take no notice.

i do go away eventually. :notme:

As Superb170 correctly mentions, the adaptive function / features only work in 'Auto' mode.

Haha, I bet these 'twinkly-no-good lights' are already turned off :D

No. It means booking it in on a Saturday morning and a trip over to Scally pool to get that done, so I'm just trying to grin and bare it with gross embarrasment  at the mo.

I presume you mean the winky fog light night time feature, not the DRL's?

I've left them on for the time being.

I meant the reverse feature where both front fog lights turn on when reverse gear is selected. This feature is part of the 'cornering fog light' setting.

Whilst I very much like the cornering fog lights I am very concious of what other people think when I'm reversing, probably "look at that plank with his fog lights on"!

At least most people now know that one fog light at slow speeds when a car is turning is the cornering fog lights in action.

Both cornering / fog lights on together might be a little excessive though...

I am very concious of what other people think when I'm reversing, probably "look at that plank with his fog lights on"!

Who cares...instead of thinking like that, try picturing them going; "look at that nice Superb, even the fogs come on automatically when he reverses! I wish I had that car"

Why limit the capabilities of the car, based on what others might think?? Years ago you were a ****** if you had satnav, now every car has it. It's the same with any innovation. Right now we all think the Merc S-class with it's infrared nightvision system is nuts. Give it a few years and we'll all have it...be glad you have some premium functionality that not all have, without paying the premium price...

IIRC the Octavia  had AFS1 and the Superb AFS 2, the Octavia has bending and leveling and AFS 2 adds range adjustment and rain sensor so they are two different units. The Octavia system works on either "on" or "auto" and the Superb only on "auto".

Nice one.

Thought I was going nuts!

Anyway, you're all right.

They work ON AUTO, so tar for the info.

I'd probably never have known otherwise, as I don't use the auto facilty.

Just out of curiosity, you say you don't use Auto, nor do I, however at night when my lights are turned on they are nearly always in the Auto position.

The reason for this is that my light switch is always in the '0' or off position. When I drive at night I move the switch to the frst position (Auto) and obvuiosly at night this turns on the headlights. So at night I'm always in 'Auto'.

The only time I have to pass through the 'Auto' position, past side lights and into the 'dipped headlight' position to get my headlights to turn on is during the day in fog or in rain/poor visibility.

Are you just moving the light switch all the way over the right when wanting headlights on and therefore missing out on the extra features observed when in 'Auto' mode?

Have been, yes.

Not particularly bothered about the 'see me home' lights tbh, as I walk behind the car to gain entry to my front door.

Obviously, I'll now use 'auto' at night time.

I'm not a fan of the coming / leaving home function either.

You can turn this feature off via Maxidot and then continue to use the Auto setting at night to ensure you get the other associated features mentioned earlier.

You thought correct. There are only two light versions

1. All halogen.

2. The Bi-Xenon headlights (which always have the adaptive functions, which only work when the light switch is on "auto").
