Smelly air-con - do off the shelf cleaning / anti-bac products work / as good as ATS etc?

Featured Replies

Noticed a funny smell in the car, traced it to the air vents, guessing it's the air con system that needs a clean / anti bacterial treatment.

Have seen ATS vouchers @ amazon for £33 for recharge plus clean - but I don't think it needs the recharge.

Have seen diy clean products for a tenner.

Are these diy products effective / as effective as what ATS etc. would do?

They are 'sprays' ... will ATS etc. really do anything more thorough / better?

Or for £33 sheets all in is it worth just getting them to do the whole thing while you're there?

Cheers

I have used the normfest one from eurocarparts - seemed to remove the odour anyway - think it was about a fiver delivered -

Could also be that the systems needs re-gassing/ checking.

Have you checked the filter?

Might be worth starting there.

Filter itself isn't smelly, or especially manky - but not 'new' either.

probably worth trying changing it.

(wasn't any leaves / crap in there either last time i looked)

Wouldn't mind getting hold of one of those vouchers. How??

Filter and one of the gas bomb type fresheners, assuming doesn't need regassing.

Does the air coming out feel excessively humid aswell as smelly?

No, air feels normal.

Oh - when people say check the filter

do you mean

Air filter

or pollen filter?

filter under the dash.

It's a carbon/charcoal filter, if the smell is ammonia then change the filter, if it's not then investigate further. If the a/c doesn't work a re-gass is not normally going to fix the issue, it'll need vac testing and the source of any leak resolving and then re-gassing.

Air con is working fine (in terms of coldness)

Reckon first thing to do is replace the pollen filter then.

I've used the Comma air con cleaner spray twice in previous cars and it has worked very well - smell completely removed afterwards :)

Cheap fix.

Fart in the car with the windows shut.

Well then at least you won't be worried about the smell of the aircon :D

Crack on then. :P

Had it done at ats last week on the 33 quid voucher - I think the anti bac they use is made by wurth? Comes in Apple, coconut, lemon or 'fresh linen'

Sparkly, why do you mention humid air?  My aircon just stopped working and the air is very humid coming out!

I have used a DIY a/c aerosol cleaner a few years back on a mk1 octy and it cured the fragrant aroma of smelly socks and stale pee!

It's bacterial build up on the air con matrix/ventilation piping inside the car.

Just use one of those antibacterial aerosol 'bombs' as mentioned inside your car. The smell will go after a few days.
