Battery Drain need VCDS garage to check alarm siren near Dawlish

Featured Replies

Our Skoda Octavia TDI 2.0  59 reg had a flat battery, charged it, then changed it. Still problem with battery drain. Took it to local garage to run diagnostics, they replaced a part to do with the alternator. Alas the battery still drains after a couple of days. I've searched on these forums and it looks like it could be the alarm siren causing the problem, as it doesn't chirp anymore on unlocking/locking it.

Can anyone recommend a garage who could help me, I've tried a couple near me and all I get is a rolling of eyes when I ask them to look into the car siren. We're in Dawlish so someone within a 10 mile ish radius would be good

Thanks

Sue

Devonutopia is in Exeter IIRC. He could help you for beer tokens I suspect :)

Could be Exmouth thinking about it

It could be that the alarm siren is faulty, they have a short life I think due to the battery inside of them,. it is situated under the front wing ,above the front wheel, access is by removing the inner plastic lining (about 6 screws) , you could try disconnecting it and seeing if it cures your flattening battery

Mine went faulty but didn't flatten the battery.  Sorry I'm not near Dawlish but I have been on hols there once.

Has anything been changed or upgraded on the car recently?

Battery drain can occur if controllers and modules within the car's communication system are changed or altered. They effectively leave themselves powered up all the time, hence causing the battery to drain.

alternatively. http://www.volkscraft.com are in marsh barton, i've used Matt for the 5 years i've had my octavia.. ex seat master tech... highly recommended :)

I know this sounds a silly question: You haven't left something plugged into either of the power sockets have you?

Thanks to all for your replies.

Wardy - We've had the car since new (thanks to the scrappage scheme) and have not altered anything on it as we don't have the kit or the expertise.

Rainbow - It's not a silly question - sometimes you can miss the bleedin' obvious! We did have an iPhone cable in the front 12V socket, we removed it after the original battery flattened the first time & not plugged anything in since.

neomancer - Thanks for the recommendation. I'll summarise what has happened and been done to the car then contact Matt at volkscraft in Marsh Barton. We've got visitors arriving so it might have to wait a week. It's great living by the coast but you do get a lot of visitors.

I'll post back once we sorted it and what was needed.

Update: problem solved: Intermittent battery drain caused by heated seat controller

I emailed Matt at Volkscraft and he replied promptly to say would be happy to look into it and he hoped it would take approc 2hrs investigation time. He found that the battery drain was intermittent and after a couple of hours he had narrowed it down to something inside the cabin, the rpoblem was that it was random, one overnight monitoring should no drain at all. Matt asked if we would authorise him to spend another hour investigating. This paid off as he found it was a fault on the passenger heated seat, he removed the controller which is located under the passenger seat and the drain stopped, the only remaining concern he had was if the problem was linked to the heated seat controls on the dash.

We've now had the car back for over 2 weeks and made a point of not using it for several days and after 6 days with just turning the engine over we've had no more problems. Brilliant.

So a huge thanks to neomancer for recommending Matt, I'm not sure anyone else would have spent so much time (and I suspect he spent a lot more time than the 3 hours he charged us for) tracking down the fault. A new controller is about £40 so not too painful! Given the current heatwave we'll wait to replace  the controller  next time we take it in (to Matt).
