Excessive charge air temps cause limp mode?

Featured Replies

Just a quick one, had an issue of limp mode on the vRS when in Germany recently. On a de-restricted section of the Autobahn we were doing the obligatory flat out run.

Only when pulling pretty much v-max did it go into limp mode, cured by cycling the ignition and carrying on at normal speeds. The fab was showing an indicated 139 on the GPS, 145 ish on the speedo.

Car is a BLT version with mild remap, never done it before, never done it since.

Could it be heat build up on the standard cooler causing it? Fairly certain the VNT are fine as it boosts well all the time, just this once?

Get it on your diagnostics at work, shoukd show the fault? :)

I would think you are right though, as the standard cooler is tiny.

If you had no turbo boost and the engine was down on acceleration, but the revs did eventually get there then I would go for the sticky VNT.

The first time my old Mk1 Octavia did this it was back to normal when I re started, a week later it did it again then every day, finally the engine light came on with an overboost fault code.

I run a scan gauge ii on my BLT and one of the readings monitors intake temperatures and on a really hot day travelling at approximately 100mph the highest intake temp read 106c and that didn't throw up a error code or put it in to limp mode.

I reckon if it was high intake temps throwing the limp mode you would have felt the power from the engine cutting back before it went into limp mode

Yes you can put it into limp mode from too high temps

I managed it once when it was properly heat soaked (took a bit of doing) at vmax it will be running super hot

Get it scanned and check the condition of the intercooler to see if it's full of dirt. If you have a remap and haven't upgraded the intercooler, then this is not unexpected.
