SE Business V Elegance

Featured Replies

Hi all, totally new to this forum.

I have been a Volvo driver (company cars) for the last 8 years but with revised budgets I am looking elsewhere and the new Octavia ticks many boxes.

With the new SE Business I seem to be able to load this up with many extras that pretty much match the Elegance spec. With a OTR budget of 22K and a generous 15 percent discount from Skoda I think I like this spec.

2.0D Saloon, DSG

Metallic Paint (Black)

Winter Pack

Bi-Xenon

Columbus Upgrade

Canton

Rear Arm Rest

Sunset Glass

Rear LED Lights

3 Spoke MFSW DSG Paddles

All for 21,999.70 OTR

The only thing pulling me towards the Elegance is 17" Alloys and partial leather

Still undecided, I have a demonstrator SE at home for a few days and I am loving the performance.

Any comments or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm Not sure, has the SE Business got the front storage box/arm rest (you won't believe how much you'll miss it on motorways)

Columbus ain't worth paying for, DSG paddles/3 spoke ? maybe on the diesel as it revs too high in auto but, its a lot for the look otherwise you could ditch these two and go for 18" Alloys

Boot nets and the spare wheel are the best value practical options, rear air bags/crew protect if you've got kids ain't a ****load of money either for the peace of mind, I went Elegance for the GFV but, it ain't an issue for a company car.

Regards

Thanks, the SE Business does have the centre arm rest with storage box.

Honest suggestion is see if the dealer has an Elegance in the used section and have a sit in it to compare and contrast the features. I sat in a 2013 elegance and felt it was a significant step up from the base SE, discounted the Business as it just adds a few nick nacks and little in my opinion for value for money. I wasn't really considering the Elegance as an actual proposal until I sat in one and being in it changed my mind.

Also don't forget the Skoda isn't a saloon as a lot of reps and company car drivers don't like to be seen with a hatch, something that surprises me that Skoda didn't offer the same boot system as the Superb even as an option.

Astec123, Thanks for your comments.

I took an elegance out for a short ride (a demonstrator) and to be honest with the SE Business now including sat Nav, cruise control and 4 spoke MFSW I am struggling to justify £1500 extra for the elegance when I can get all the kit above. All I can see extra is the bigger wheels and half leather trim.

Because of budget restrictions I would only have around £500 of extras to play with on an Elegance (excluding metallic) but with a SE Business I have just over £3,000 to play with.

I will take your advise and go and look at an Elegance again but honestly believe the difference between the two is no marginal.

Welcome to Briskoda.

Contact some more steelers and haggle to get what you want.  They will deliver too.

I found the mfsw and sat nav useful bits of kit on my mk2 SE+. If the car also has bluetooth for the phone it works well with the mfsw. If your doing loads of miles cruise will be of benefit too, plus as it's a company car you won't loose out come trade in on the cost of all those extras either which is a big plus point. As previous its worth a decent test drive of both to help you make your mind up, especially if your going to be doing high milage. Good luck.

You are forgetting also that the Elegance also comes with folding mirrors with puddle lights, £440 worth of intelligent light assist (and high beam assist), colour maxidot and if you get the estate a variable boot floor too.

so not just 17's and half leather but probably fair to say the car is a little more competent on 17's and standard suspension than on 16's (225/45 v 205/55 tyres) and the leather/alcantara is frankly way nicer than the SE's cloth.

Personally id just take a standard Elegance and be done with it; knocking the DSG off would also save tax outlay (lower list price and emissions) and arguably drive a bit better. DSG isnt bad but you'll really want an auto to go DSG over a manual particularly in a TDI; DSG works alot better in petrol cars Ive found and the gearchange on the 6 speed used in the 2.0 TDi's has a very nice shift quality.

If you're doing big miles then don't go for the DSG.  10 mpg difference over a manual box and 2% extra BIK due to emissions.

Get an Elegance and add winter pack.  In reality that's about all you need to add to it on a diesel.

What no spare ?

The Elegance comes with a space saver.

You sure? Didn't when I ordered a few months ago.

Definitely no spare wheel as standard, is an optional extra.

Only thing I would say is that with all that extra spec you are going to be liable to a bit more CC tax...the company may be paying 22k for the car but I expect you'll still be liable to pay tax on the full P11D value of the car inclusive of options (which with that spec will be 26ish K) unless of course the car is supplied and funded differently and so not subject to car tax in the traditional sense.

If paying tax appreciate its your car and your call entirely but Id have not chucked the additional spec on the car and kept the tax outlay in my own pocket, just my humble opinion....not like a bog standard Elegance is particularly wanting for equipment.

Hmmm...  Well remembered Pip, you kinda take some of this stuff for granted when you just have it, I had a Mk2 in Elegance as well and when I looked at the SE their were just a few things missing that I knew would annoy me.

They wont be buying through finance so the RRP can be beaten by the dealer just by negotiating. If you are buying outright then try using CarWow and then take the details to your dealer to ask them to match it, I got 2 local dealers to match the finance deal I was offered, 1 would not take my part ex the other was so keen for my business they took my P/X and matched the price, I even appear to have been given free servicing when the offer wasn't on. You can still use it for the 0% finance but the discount will always be less.

Best price I got for a base Elegance 2.0 TDI Hatch was £20,402 to buy with cash. To buy with the finance offer best I got offered was £22,184. So I'd suspect this will be part of the reason why and also the various tax loopholes for company type cars meaning it will be the excluding tax figure.

Thanks for the info... I have taken this car in finance for 3 years. I am expecting it in two weeks time. It annoying that you don't get much deal on finance :-/

I'd say I was getting an excellent deal at £22k for the car with Metalic paint, Winter pack and the 3 year servicing on the 0% finance deal.

With basic haggling you should see at least 7% off list price with finance. :)

I did lots of fishing around with a few dealers and my company talking to Skoda UK.

If it's a SE Business the dealer can offer a 1% discount plus a Skoda support of 14%

On an Elegance I have been fortunate enough to get an 11% discount from the dealer plus an additional 4% discount from the group.

When talking to one dealer he opened up and stated, on current Octavia models they can go to a max of 14% to anyone! with the exception of the SE Business which the extra discount has to be negotiated via a company car policy. With the amount of extra kit on a SE Business they are targeting "Mr Company Car Driver", to keep the car the same price as an SE is evidence they are taking on Ford, Vauxhall and the others in the company car race.

It's taken a lot to pull me away from another Volvo, I guess I am one of the many company car drivers that have been seduced by the Octavia. I never thought I would ever order a Skoda but times change and so does brand recognition.

Montozuma, please see the below breakdown -

Basic car - £18120.83

Metallic - £437.50

Bi-Xenon £875.00

LED rears - £125.00

Sunset Glass -£116.67 (this is being done after the car has been delivered to the dealer along with de-badging)

Winter Pack - £358.33

Canton - £333.33

Columbus Upgrade - £666.67

Total this lot up, less 15% + VAT + £565 delivery and registration all nets out at £22019.00. My kind dealer absorbed the £19.03 to get me under £22K

With regards to Pipsyps comments regarding tax, my current S80 had a taxable value of £27K so no real change for me there

Is the SE Business actually available on PCP?

I know with Vauxhall's TechLine (I think) models, they're not available on the consumer finance deals as they are targeted purely at business users.
