Headlights set to auto but think they're on manual and stay on

Featured Replies

I've got a problem with my headlights (xenons). They've been set to auto since the day I picked the car up but twice now (once 2 week ago and once yesterday) I have pulled up turned the ignition off and a warning light (and beeping) has come on the dash telling me to turn my lights off.

The first time I thought it was just the car getting confused and left the car without manually turning them off since they were in auto. The main headlights had turned off but I didn't notice (until someone knocked on my office door) that the daylight running lights were still on 2 hours later. I checked and it was definitely still set to auto so I turned it to off then back to auto and they stayed off.

It done the same thing last night.

Is there a reset I can perform or is it a dealer job?

Any issue like this take it back to the dealer, its brand new and they will sort it for you.

Did you leave the indicator on?

Phil

Bet you've switched off leaving an indicator on.

Great minds think alike eh Phil?

No definitely no indicator on either time. On the route to where I park there's no need to indicate for around half a mile so I would have noticed over this period and when I returned to the car it wasn't 'ticking'.

I need to chase the dealer about paint cracking on the joint of the rear window which they inspected last week so I'll give them a call later today.

Do you have KESSY..?
I have the same thing when I park the car, raise the clutch, StopStart activates but then I open the door/release the seat belt/put the gear into 1st.

I also have the lights always in Auto.

The Maxidot give the warning "Lights Are On. Lights activate for 1 hour" & there is a warning "beep".

However, when I get out of the car & lock the door, the Maxidot (and I assume ignition) is turned off, the main lights & daylight running lights go off after 30s.

At least I think the DLRs go off... I'll test it tonight...

I've never had a flat battery though....

Yes I do have Kessy.

I do the same except I hit the ignition button to turn it off (I think). I'll see what I do when I pull up tonight and test doing it without hitting the button. I think my message on maxidot is just "turn off lights" so may be different.

The daylight running lights are LED's aren't they? If so they'd probably need I be on for a long long time to flatten the battery.

Yes this is true.

I will check tonight both ways with switchingthe ignition off & just getting out of the car & let you know what happens on mine.

I would expect that either way, the ignition is shut-off & lights turn off after the "follow you home" time when you have locked the car & it detects the key isnt inside anymore.

My Mk2 did this lights on all the time was a problem with the switch had to be replaced

I was going to ask about this, I've had this a few times since getting the car 3 weeks ago (Elegance Est, KESSY, DRL's turned off, lights on auto).

Will put it on my list for the dealer on my first visit.

Just tried it both ways (turning ignition off and just opening the drivers door) and both ways the lights went off. It must be an intermittent thing.

I've just done the same and as you no problems, I think it needs to be running for a while and the lights to have been switched on automatically, I have noticed that it has happened when the lights have switched on because of the rain sensor.

Will keep a closer eye on it and post back.

I have been exerimenting with my lights set on the auto setting (I have KESSY too), generally when I arrive somewhere and park the engine stops automatically, I then get out and the radio etc turn off and I lock the car with no problems, but if I do the same when the lights are on I get the warning message and have to turn the lights off, but if I press the start/stop button before I get out then the lights automatically go out with no message.

Hope that helps.

That's makes sense, getting out without pressing the stop button is leaving the ignition on, like leaving the key in it would.

It done it again yesterday. When turning the ignition on and off the lights stayed on so that eliminates that possibility for why mine are doing it. Only way of getting them to turn off was to manually switch them to off then back to auto. Dealer was meant to call me yesterday afternoon but didn't so I'll chase them up.

James, sorry I didn't reply sooner.

I spent a lot of time playing with mine and the way in which the engine stops, if I press the ignition button before exciting and how the car is locked.

In all cases, the lights stay until I lock the door, after which they go off after the selected 20s follow you home time.

Before I lock the door there are two warnings, beep then lights on, followed by another beep and a message lights stay on for maximum 1 hour.

I don't get these if I turn off the ignition manually with the button.

Sounds like you have a problem with the switch out perhaps the door controller module or central body module which gives the message to the lighting system to say it's locked
